From reading posts on this board it seems the Saponi/Siouan descendants are in three categories. Groups who stayed in VA/NC, families that scattered, and the group that merged with the Six Nations in Ontario.

Makayla Sault is an 11-year old Ojibwe girl here in Ontario. She was being treated for leukemia with chemotherapy at a hospital in Hamilton ON. She opted to stop the chemo which she said was killing her body and practice Six Nations traditional medicine. The Children's Aid Society threatened to intervene than backed off. It is 'Aboriginal Awareness Week' right now in Canada.

CBC: Judge suggests we can't 'second-guess' First Nations' mom's cancer treatment decision for daughter (http://www.cbc.ca/news/aboriginal/first-nation-family-s-refusal-of-chemo-a-precedent-setting-case-expert-says-1.2800883)

The hospital is suing Children's Services to try and force treatment.

This story hits close to home for me. A family member passed yesterday from cancer at 36 years old. She underwent a full regime of hospital treatments at a total cost of over one million dollars. (covered by insurance)

Some quotes related to this story:

"Yes, we accept your culture, but when it gets serious, not so much," - the Judge - attempting to characterize the hospital's approach

The Haudenosaunee people which Im a member of, we have our sovereignty still intact and we are governed by the great law that predates Canada.

and

"As a member of the Six Nations Confederacy, I will not have my decisions of health care for my child debated and judged in the Canadian judicial system. The Canadian judicial system does not have the authority to determine our law or practices, which predates the existence of Canada, valid or otherwise." - Makayla Sault's mother

My prayers of strength and healing to the family. They made the right choice.
I support everyones choice to their own healthcare decisions. No one should have authority to force their oppinions of "health care" on anyone, nor threat of medical kidnapping.
Many people suffer from this outside of the Indiginous people as well. Its unfortunate that proven natural healing practices are in many ways outlawed, and what is proven lethal and dangerous to many people is legal and forced. A disgusting injustice to all humanity.

I agree. It is sad to see people post negative comments about the family's decision even after Makayla's passing. They don't even take the time to read what the family has shared, they just dump on traditional practices and assert the ultimate authority of doctors. Even to the point of trying to take a child away from her parents.

It seems many of the best doctors and clinics are starting to wake up to the reality that healing the spirit is part of healing the body. There is no reason people cannot have both traditional medicines and western medicines.

The way Makayla faced this should be a lesson to us all.
