On the 5th of July 1790, the year of his parent’s death, seventeen year-old John Jones married fifteen year-old Sarah Sumpter (1775-1847) in Franklin County Virginia (Virginia Marriages 1660-1800). They would leave Franklin County Virginia for a final destination of Randolph County Indiana. One source places them in Clinton County Ohio on the way. Greenville Tennessee and Kentucky are also claimed by their children as birthplaces on census records. Twelve children were born to Reverend John Jones and Sarah Sumpter, eight daughters and four sons.

Reverend John Jones daughter, Anna Hanna Jones (1809-1875) married James Stapleton Lewis (1814-1901) on the 10th of May 1833 in Jackson County Missouri. They would have eight children, all sons. Later they would move West from Missouri to Utah and are recorded on the 1860 census living in Summit County, Utah Territory.
