    Smile Melton's From Roxboro NC

This is a database that my brother started some time ago. Updates need to be made but it gives a generalized idea of when family members were born and passed on. Stephen and Dora Melton were my great grandparents. Their son King Haliburton Melton was my grandfather and his daughter is my mother.
Decendants of this family meet every year on Easter Sunday at the home of my grandparents. The crowd gets fewer each year but it's still available for any decendants interested in being there next year.

Are the dates and places of their births/deaths, information you still need?

    Melton's of Person Co.

DavisForever, your recent post reminded me I never looked into your aunt living in the Bullock, NC area. I apologize as when we get up home it seems to be all about seeing our mama's and two daughter's families and time gets away from us. Please send me her name and I will certainly try to see if she is in that area. My home place is in Grassy Creek just a few miles over from there.
It seems someone mentioned the Meltons on this forum before and it may have been you. I thought I posted names from a very old Bible I have in my possession for someone but if not I would be glad to share them with you and your brother. They are Meltons and the Bible was printed in 1761. The entries are all in the 1700's. My grandfather purchased a trunk at an estate sale in the early 1900's and the Bible was in the trunk. It was always kept safe but is in very poor condition. Since Halifax Co. Va. and Person Co. are not that far away from Grassy Creek these names might fit in your puzzle somewhere and I would be happy to share them. Ed

Purported parents of William Thomas Melton:
Stephen Melton, b. ?, d. Before 1840s Granville Co., NC.
    Granville Co., NC Marr Bonds
Stephen Melton and Elizabeth Puryear, 25 Oct 1799.

Some 'warm' feeling that they may be his parents....
1850 Granville Co., NC census; Country Line District; 28 Nov; p.182:
    Household 66:
    Willis Royster, 48, m, - , Farmer, $1575, NC
    William MELTON, 24, m, - , NC

    Household 75:
    Elizabeth MELTON, 70, f, - , $466, NC
    Wm H. Puryear, 21, m, - , farmer, $0, NC

While this sequence does not prove absolutely that Stephen & Elizabeth Melton are William's parents, it does provide some circumstancial foundation for the assertion for which there may be more records.

    Unverified:
Elizabeth's purported father is William Puryear, b. 1758 Warwick (Lunenburg?) Co., Va; d. 1838 Granville Co., NC.
    .....
There is a tree purporting Stephen (the elder) Melton's parents to be:
Henry Melton, b.1739 Granville Co., NC, d. 1792 Granville, NC, marr'd Agnus/Agnes _?_. This line seems well documented back to Richard Melton, b.1670 New Kent Co., Va, d.1742 Hanover Co., Va, m'd Mary Ross (1675-1750) at the New Kent Monthly Meeting.
    (Henry, b.1739/ Henry, b.1719/ John, b.1697/ Richard, b.1670)
The 'weak' point of this tree is the lack of absolute proof that Henry and Agnes are Stephen's parents.

a Henry Melton served on the Granville Co., NC Grand Jury in 1786 & 1788 and Harris Hicks and Absolom Hicks were bound to Henry Melton on 7 Nov 1755 to become Blacksmiths, per History and Genealogy of Granville Co., NC.

    Melton's

Bill, I found both of your post's interesting to say the least. Back in June of '06 I posted information from a Bible in my possession. It is in rough condition but pretty much like it was the first time I saw it in my home. My Grandfather bought a trunk at an estate sale in early 1900's and one of the items was this old Church of England Bible printed in 1761. The entries have to do with the Melton family.
You give info on Melton family from 1920 census. It states they were living in Sassafras Fork Township. That is in Northern Granville County, NC along the Virginia line . That is where my homeplace is and the house where I was born and raised is located. My Grandfather built that house in 1905. Many of the names in your post are Northern Granville Co. NC, Halifax Co. Va and Person County, NC names.
You mention Bartlett Yancey and the three Yancey families or lines in Granville County do connect and form a large pool of cousins.
Here is the information in that Bible:
In beautiful scrip is written John Melton at top of page.
Near the bottom is written Henry Melton was born 17 day of April______no year written. Then Hrny Y Melton was born on 17 of _______no futher info.

The page before has these entries:
Liza Melton Daughter of Susannah Melton was born on 11th day of April 1813
    on Sunday about 2 oclock.
Agnes hestor was born 17 day of January 1790
Elizabeth hestor was Born the 8 day of November 1791
_______hestor was born the 6 of April 1793
henry hestor was born the 17 of April 1794

It sounds like the Bible I have would certainly fit into the family your information covers. There is also the name Joanna Melton Wells entered in the Bible but no futher information for her.

It would certainly please me to find out if this Bible is connected to this family and it seems to possible. Ed

    Melton's from Roxboro

    Ed,
I wonder if this would help. There is a will for Henry Melton 1792-95 Granville co NC with Agnes qualifying as executor 1800. Children, Joanna, Pomfret, James, Henry. Joanna marries Michael HESTER 2-9-1778. An Agnes Hester born in Granville C1789 with parents Joanna Melton and Michael Hester, showing Joanna Melton's father and grandfather both as Henry.
Further, in the line of Richard Melton mentioned above as well documented, are sons John, died between 1751-55? Had a son Henry, and Absolem. Joel, Samuel, James, John, William.
Richard Melton also had Robert..this line marrying into Allen lines. Richard out of New Kent co. It was Robert's son Nathan who married Nancy Allen and had land on Haw River by Haw old fields. I can't believe all of these people aren't related, but who is the father of William Melton and Sarah in Stephen H. Melton's line?

    Melton's

Sag, your post seems to confirm this Bible in my possession is certainly a part of this Melton family. Are you in this line and would you like for me to attempt to make a copy of the entries for you? The Bible itself is very fragile with no leather left on the front and back boards and they are held together with leather thongs.
    You have a copy of the entries in my earlier post but we have John Melton;
then Joanna Melton (Wells) the last name is hard to read and I will look back again comparing with your information.
Then the name of Henry Melton and Hrny Y Melton with incomplete birth information. Appears both entries could be same person.
Then Liza Melton Daughter of Susannah Melton.
Again we see names you mentioned from your information.
Agnes hestor but not 1789, the entry says 17 day of January 1790.
Elizabeth hestor was born 8 day of November 1791
_________hestor was born the 6 day of April 1793
henry hestor was born the 17 of April 1794

I believe the family information you have certainly connects with this Bible.
Would you or whoever may be connected to this family like for me to try and send a copy ? Just sent me your information to eyancey@ec.rr.com and I will be glad to do it. ED

Yes, Ed, these are the same lines as in the Bible you have.
I've been working on this for awhile and it's pretty tangled, so haven't posted most of it yet, but soon.
That Bartlett Yancy (Robert J.'s father) line goes:
Bartlett b.1819 Caswell NC/Bartlett b.1785 Caswell NC/Bartlett 1736 Hanover Va/James 1704/Charles b.1684 m'd Mary Bartlett, b. 17 Apr 1682, back into Pr. Edward/Kg Wm & New Kent, Va. There are Bolling/Thornton/Moore/Graves/Allen lines in and out of it but don't know which ones yet.
The Mecklenburg Va to Halifax Va and Caswell/Granville/Person NC are the same line thru Charles and his siblings - the Henry that SAJ mentioned is one of the downlinks.

    Melton's from Roxboro NC

    Thanks Bill for the Info.
And Ed, Thanks for the offer of the bible. These Meltons appear to be cousins of the Allen/Melton lines as they connect back to Richard. I don't really need a copy of it.
There are at least two lines (related) that connect Allen and Meltons and likely more with some interesting marriages within. The Charles Allen born 1787 NC married to Nancy Melton is of the Drury Allen line and Laurana or Lurana? Hartgrove/Hartgrave..now I'm confused. Anyway, two of the Charles and Nancy's children marry into the Tapp..Vincent and Rosanna Hopson line..Another William Lynn Allen marries Susan Green Melton..Isaac and Miranda Roberts..Laurana Allen and Benjamin Woodward..Many of these end up in Rutherford co NC.
Robert Allen, cousin to Drury, has the line of Nancy Allen and Nathan Melton in Orange co NC Haw River circa 1760..Thomas Melton marries Elizabeth Allen..Elijah Melton marries Elizabeth Batson and Ann Green. William Alexander Melton marries 3 times..wife Lucy Daniel Allen (#2) ..one of their children,

    Hi Sue,

Just bringing this forward for Three Crows as they would be a direct descendant of William and Letitia White Melton mentioned above through their son Reuben.

Hello. I'm a MELTON descendant, though I've not been able to get back past my great-great-grandfather. Here's my line:

    William P. MELTON (b abt 1820 d aft 1880)
    +Holland

    their children:
    1) William MELTON, Jr. (b 1839, Onslow Co, NC)
    +Miranda SMITH

    2) Mary MELTON (b 1844, Onslow Co, NC)

    3) Lorenzo MELTON (b 1844 [twin], Onslow Co, NC d Duplin Co, NC)
    aka David Wesley WILLIAMS
    +Letticia LITTLETON

    4) Elizabeth MELTON (b 1848, Onslow Co, NC)

    5) James Edmond MELTON (b 1852, Onslow Co, NC d 1918, Kinston, NC)
    +Nancy Jane SALTER

    6) Nancy MELTON (b 1853, Onslow Co, NC)
    +Elijah RIGGS

    7) Joseph MELTON (b 1855, Onslow Co, NC)

    8) Sarah Frances MELTON (b 1859, Onslow Co, NC d 1936, Wilmington, NC) +Elza Thomas HOBBS

I am descended from both James E. MELTON and Sarah Frances MELTON (my great-grandparents were first cousins). The children of James E. MELTON (b 1852 d 1918) and Nancy Jane SALTER are:

    1) William MELTON (b 1888, Beaufort, NC)

    2) Charlie Mann MELTON (b 1890, Bogue, Carteret NC d 1958, Greenville)
    +Serena CARR

    3) Bula MELTON (b 1895, Bogue, Carteret NC)

    4) Holland Elizabeth MELTON (b 1893, Morehead City, NC d 1960 New Bern, NC) + William Franklin HOBBS **my great-grandparents**

    5) Matilda MELTON (b 1898, Bogue, NC d 1953, Kinston, NC)

    6) Jack MELTON (b 1902, Bogue, NC d 1967, TX)

    7) Curtis Lee MELTON (b 1903, Bogue, NC)
    +Louise JONES

    8) Coleman MELTON

So far as I know, this family is listed as "white" in every records I've seen. However, I've seen photos of these MELTONs and they absolutely look Native American. Also, my mother & I have shovel teeth and other cranial-facial features indicatitive of Indian ancestry. Additionally, DNA testing showed my genetic composition to be 25% American Indian, with my mother's mtDNA haplogroup being B (again, indicative of American Indian ancestry). Oral family tradition claims our family was Cherokee, but this is almost certainly untrue given the coastal location. They were probably Meherrin. This branch also has ties to the ELKS family who were Hatteras Indian.

My great-great-grandmother Holland might have been a FAIRCLOTH or JONES (though there is no actual evidence of her maiden name). Many of my relatives in this line settled in Wilmington, NC, Bladen Co., NC and Columbus Co, NC.

    Meltons from roxboro NC

To all of the Melton cousins...Hi!
From what I gather, Richard Melton of New Kent co Va had two wives at least. The first produced Robert b circa 1696 married Mary. (I thought Farrar?) And John and William born 11 Dec 1698 married to Elizabeth O. Farrar. This is the line that William married Lettice White descends from. Robert b circa is one line that gets all mixed up with the Allen families originating in New Kent co Va.
Another brother Thomas died young. Also a Mary and a Joel?
Richard also married Orpha Luten (Laten) of Chowan co NC...married in 1705.
They have a John, Barnaby, Jonathan who marries Purify and died in Onslow co NC 1758. and other children?
I wonder about the Onslow co NC group being connected to this. It looks like there was a migration of some back to the Chatham and Orange co NC area.
Then there are many many descendants in the Rutherford NC area.
Three Crows, I think Burton Jones Melton is a brother to your Minerva? Down the line of William and Lettice is a Opecannough Melton. I thought that was interesting.
And Beeleaf, Talitha Melton married Anderson Branch. I got so confused looking at all of this but would he be a great uncle or uncle? Talitha is aka Lucy.
