Those are all your family names? If so, they're all names I've seen belong to Haliwa-Saponi people, though I'm sure you know that.

If you're so good with Halifax/Warren county genealogies, maybe you can help someone I know. Her family was in a smaller Indian enclave on the other side of the Roanoke, but the family stories indicate they had ties to Halifax/Warren people, some generations back they were visiting there, not sure if it was friends or family they were visiting. They've been trying to get over that way to do some research. Their family records play out by the 1830/40's or so and they're trying to get back further.

Hi. I am new here. I just recently discovered that my great grandparents were from Halifax,NC. There names are James Evans and Mattie Griggs. I had a hard time getting that information from my father and uncle because they didn't know much about them. Most of the Evans I know of of either Haliwa Saponi or Lumbee. I am going to the Halifax Library next week. Does anyone have any advice on certain records to look for? Thanks.

I am not sure were James died. I was told that they also lived in Athens/Marietta GA, but that is all of the information that my father knows. James had a son named Claude Smith Evans, my grandfather and a daughter named Mildred. I think his other son was James Jr. Claude was born around 1915, but not sure how accurate the date of his birth is.

I am not sure if this is relevant to the Evans family but it is common for the males to have 12 sets of fingures. My brother was born with this birth defect.

Hi. I was actually told by a cousin that my ggrandparents lived in Jasper Co Georgia. It was once called Randoph co prior to that. I seen alot of Davis,Jeffreys/Jeffries,Griffens, Chavis, Banks,Clemments,Farleys,Evans. The settlers migrated out of VA from what I read. Trying to find out if they have a Saponi connection considering their migration patterns and tight nit communities.

    What part of VA

  9. #9
Hi. I thought I replied last night but it didn't go through. The places where some of the families came from mentioned Brunswick County, VA, Cumberland County, VA, Orange County VA, Prince George Co, VA, Bertie County, NC and Robeson County NC. I got this from the book "History of Jasper County Georgia". I don't have the book right in front of me now but it also mentioned that there were over 5,000 Free Person's of Color in 1810.

Interesting. I am not familiar with those areas but am learning more as I do research. From what I have observed, it seems to be a connection to these certain families no matter were they migrated to. I also wanted to mention that alot of the families were Revolutionary solidiers as well.

How do you know about your family leaving Brunswick County at the time the Fort closed, Saponiweaver? I don't know of anyone finding any records during that period, despite many looking. There was like a 50 year blackout before records were recorded of anybody much besides landed white people. I'm curious.

  14. James Evans of VA b. 1779

Hello All, Been a while since i visited. And I'm still looking for the identity of my Anthony Evans from Lewis KY 1815. I did get some new info from the Lewis County historical that his Father may have been a James Evans b. VA 1779 and Mary Unknown b. PA 1776 They lived up the road from Anthony and Mary Jane in the 1850 Census of Greenup / Lewis KY. Ring a bell for anyone? Mary Jane Mcdowell's linage included Adams, Hart, Shaine, Chambers, Hardwick /Ross and Rice families mostly seaming to come from Paradise PA area. Thanks! -Ray

    Evans Family

As I know it, the EVANS family is one of the well known lines of the Haliwa-Saponi... My 5th Great grandfather was Isaac EVANS (b. 1750, Nash Co., NC), and his daughter, my 4th Great grandmother, was Charity EVANS (b. 1786, Nash Co., NC), by way of my BATCHELOR lines...

You will find various intermarriages between EVANS, RICHARDSON, SILVER, LYNCH, DAVIS, COPELAND, HARDY, BATCHELOR & other families linked to the Haliwa-Saponi. Before the Haliwa-Saponi received State recognition, there was the Haliwanash Indian Club, which was designated for Native American descendants living in Halifax, Warren, & Nash County, NC...
    Maternal... QUALLS | DAVIS | HARDY | TAYLOR | JOHNSON | BATCHELOR | DANIEL | BASS | EVANS | JONES | COBB | ROWZEE | PIERCE | WILLIAMS | ALLEN | HANCOCK | WHITE | BOULDEN | HUNT | UNDERWOOD |GATES | STREET | WOODWARD | OLMSTEAD

Paternal... HINES | HILLIARD | FOX

    Connections... MCWILLIAMS | WHITEHEAD | SILVER | LYNCH | RICHARDSON | HEDGEPETH
