It is getting real alright.
Morton County Sheriff's Dept Facebook is down and they have not been able to get it back up. Some of their posts were generating tens of thousands of negative responses. It might have become a liability they took down themselves, or it became a target for hackers. Reports are that nobody can get through on their phone lines either. Apparently due to the volume of people calling to register objections to their actions.
Now the ND Governor has ordered an evacuation of the Očhéthi Šakówiŋ camp for the day after the Vets are set to arrive. They have also said they are going to cut off emergency services. But the highway was already blocked, so don't see what has changed in that regard. It took 6-8 hours for Sophia Wilanksy to get to the hospital the way it already was.
Sheriff Kirchmeier and the MCSD have now been sued for excessive force. Sheriff Schwartzenberger has been removed from his duties. The State Attorney cited "misconduct, malfeasance, crime in office, neglect of duty or gross incompetency” and creating a "quasi-military environment" as reasons. Sheriff's departments from out of state have started refusing to send their officers to Standing Rock.
When I was at a conference in Philadelphia lately I had the chance to hear John Echohawk speak. He urged those present to learn about what is going on at Standing Rock and help in any way they can. His letter to the Department of Justice from the Native American Rights Fund is to the point: http://narf.convio.net/site/DocServe...pdf?docID=1841
