Hi Ericka,
Yes, I have been to the Greene County Archives, but it has been a few years. (I keep a running list of things to look up when I get a chance to go to Ohio.) The Archives and the Xenia Library both have very nice set-ups. They have nice collections and they actually let you see the records first hand. And, the people I have dealt with in Xenia were all very nice and helpful.
Our local board of health won’t allow you to look at the records and they won’t make copies of them either. When I request death/birth records here, all I get is a typed copy of what they “think” the record says (and they charge you $7 for a typed copy). I have requested my great-grandfather’s death record twice. I thought I lost it the first time, but later found it and when I compared the two, the records had two different people listed for his father – a slight detail error when dealing with genealogy.
I have also done a little bit of looking into Zachariah Jones and I am wondering if he and Zachariah Valentine aren’t one in the same??? Or, maybe Zachariah Valentine could be a grandfather???
Zachariah Valentine is listed with the Cordells on the Lunenburg County Free Negroes and Mulattos Register…
