These are some of the earliest memories I have of my childhood:
Cornbread and milk sitting behind the wood cook stove in aunt Pearl’s kitchen
Looking at the first snow through the window
Going to see Grandma Vernie & grandpa Ervin Collins
Carrying my little water bucket to mother working out in the field
Christmas sitting on uncle Archie’s knee by the old pop-belly stove
Going to church with the whole family
Giving my cousins the measles
Picking wildflowers with mom and aunt Pearl
Walking on a hollow log…..that is where mom said she found me
Listening to uncle” Tunnie” sing at church
Walking everywhere we went…..something I really miss.
Listening to uncle Archie stories….tall tales…..jokes
Listening to aunt Pearl and mom singing as they worked. I still sing many of the same hymns.

My dad and aunts grew up here…in the late 40’s, 50’s…my dad has spoken of the days picking ginseng, ramps and working the mines.

Hi Brenda:
My Mother was born in Fenwick, her maiden name is Goad, I grew up in Richwood in an area called “Little Italy”. I graduated from Richwood High in 1979 but was class technically class of ’80. When I was little and after I was driving we always had fun deciding how to go to Summersville, over Fenwick Mt or through Craigsville. Small World.

November 4, 2003 at 1:36 pm #32270oh, and my father was born in Richwood…
November 4, 2003 at 1:36 pm #32272The strange thing is I was talking to my mother in Richwood when I saw the original post. I sent her 50 pages of research from ancestry.com and we were discussing how we can not trace many of our relatives more that a few generations back.

November 4, 2003 at 1:36 pm #32275I will do some searching and see what I can come up with…if you have everything off ancestry, I won’t bother to post the info.

November 4, 2003 at 1:36 pm #32277This is me and my little sister, Susie. The picture must have been taken in 1965-66. I don’t remember this photo in particular but remember many things about Susie coming home from the hospital and yet can not recall my mom being pregnant. Susie is gone, she died of breast cancer in 2005 at 40.
“When it comes time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song, and die like a hero going home.”

November 4, 2003 at 1:36 pm #32294I was born in Welch,WV.Lived in McDowell County at Davy,WV over in a “Holler” called Blackstone.I remember we carried water from a Spring. That was the sweetest tasteing water and the coldest i ever drank. It was cold in the hottest days of summer. I remember wadeing the creeks and catching Crawdads and minnows, catching fire flies, and picking apples and black berries. Those were the best of times.
