I’m researching some Conaway relatives in Sussex and Kent County, Delaware. I’ve noticed on US Censuses in Delaware that many Conaways are “mulatto” – is this a known surname to anyone here? I have a Conaway photo in my album you can take a look at to see if you can identify the heritage connection by looks.
Of note, this is the same Conaway family that intermarried a bit with the “Spanish” family in Kent and Sussex County, descendants of John Spanish, b. 1822. Apparently Spanish wasn’t his real last name, but he came to Delaware from Spain as a young man, and I’m sure there’s an intriguing story behind it since he seems to have immigrated alone. Anybody familiar with the “Spanish” family?
My 2nd GGM Annie Conaway married William Spanish (son of John) but was widowed with no issue. Later she married a Cannon and had numerous children, one of which is my GGF. He has been described as “swarthy”, “dark”, and “I don’t know what he was” regarding his race. I believe he has native features, but I need that confirmed. Is anyone good at classifying Native American phenotypes that could help people out with old photos? I admit I’m new at it and can’t quite distinguish native ancestry sometimes. Thanks.
