Hello all,
Bill suggested I bring the gen search to this forum.
From Floyd Co Va Dalton Male Marriages I got this
Dalton
Hosee T.
Simpkins
Larmie
1909
4 Register
51 Page
I’m getting booted bad so let me post this and then find the census entry
November 3, 2003 at 10:30 pm #8025From Floyd Co Gen page…… surnames of Floyd co…… Simpkins
……4. Simpkins, Larma F.
b. 4-1892 VA.
1900 FCVA IV15 Pg12 H104: Larma F. 8 yo dau, b. Apr 1892 VA, school.
I am new at this….. does the H104 indicate a single household? If so, there are a number of other people listed at H104
How do I view the census in original format?
So she was born in Apr 1892 and married in 1909 at age 17.
I have some family #s to call and see what has been found by other family members,…….. supposedly, the Daltons are traced back to Ireland but I have never seen the research….. I’ll be trying to get copies of that in hand.

November 3, 2003 at 10:30 pm #8027Dreaminghawk,
I have enough info after all…….
On the 1920 Floyd Co., Va Census, District 96, Indian Valley Twp, taken on 9 January, page 4 B; at Dwelling # 72, Family # 72 :
Dalton, Hosie L., Head, 29, Va.
Dalton, Larma F., wife, 27, Va.
Gornie L., son, 6, Va. (the “r” is a guess – nearly illegible.)
Thelma L., dau., 3, Va.
Robie N., son, 2, Va.
The “29” for Hosie is his age. Larma is “27”, etc.
All were listed as “white” unless otherwise noted.
All were born in Virginia (Va) and the census lists fathers and mothers of each of them as also born in Virginia. “Head” after Hosie’s name stands for “Head of Household”. Wife, son, dau., etc., is the relationship each of them have to the “head”.
…………………………………………………………..
1910 Floyd Co., Va. Census, Dist. 48, Indian Valley Twp, 3 May;
p. 99 B, at Dwelling # 167, family # 167 :
Dalton, William M., 42, Va, Farmer.
Delia C., wife, 38, Va.
Lillian A, dau., 16, Va.
William J., son, 14, Va.
Irby L., son, 10, Va.
Lemiel Q., son, 7, Va.
Pearl S., dau., 4, Va.
Maud A., dau., 1 + 6 months, Va.
Hosea L., son, 19, Va, Farm Laborer.
Larmie F., dau-in-law, 18, Va.
The parents of all of the above are listed as born Va.
William & Delia Dalton have been married once; have been married for 22 yrs and Delia has had 9 children, 8 of which are still living.
Hosea and Larmie have been married “0” yrs and Larmie has had no children.
……………………………………………………………..
1900 Floyd Co., Va Census, Dist. 15, 9 June, p. 6B, at 104, 106 :
Simpkins, Wm. G., Head, Mar 1861, 39, m-15, Va, Va, Va.
Simpkins, Eliza J., Wife, Jun 1854, 45, m-15, 12/8, Va, Va, Va.
Phillip McMely, Step-son, July 1877, 22, Va, Va, Va.
Simpkins, Princeton, son, Mar 1887, 13, Va, Va, Va.
Simpkins, Ambros K., son, Sept 1888, 11, Va, Va, Va.
Simpkins, Sara A., dau., July 1891, 9, Va, Va, Va.
Simpkins, Larma F., dau., Apr 1892, 8, Va, Va, Va. ****
Simpkins, John R.M., son, Dec 1896, 3, Va, Va, Va.
Simpkins, Marion J., son, Jan 1900, 4 months, Va, Va, Va.
**** Larma F.
This may be the census index that caused you to ask about “H104”. That is the Dwelling number for them on this census. It just refers to the number of houses the census taker had visited at that time.
I’ve listed the census data in the order in which it occurs on the census but without the column headings.
So, for Wm. G. Simpkins, “Mar 1861” is the month and year of his birth. “39” is his age. “m-15” means he’s been married for 15 years. “Va, Va, Va” is his place of birth, his father’s place of birth, and his mother’s place of birth, respectively.
For Eliza J., the “12/8” means she’s had 12 children and 8 are still living.
…………………………………………………………………….
The 1890 Census was burned in a warehouse fire so we’ve got nothing for that census.
I have William G. (for Garland) Simpkins’s parents Richard and Mary “Polly” Simpkins and Richard’s Father and probably several of his brothers at this time, but no time to type them in. I’ll get that info posted tomorrow morning. I also found some birth and death dates for several of the Simpkins in this line.

November 3, 2003 at 10:30 pm #8029First and foremost, thank you. This is much more info than I had, already. I did call Danville and talked to my cousin Billy. He thinks our uncle Moyer will either have the Dalton gen report or know who does. Tues at 5:30 is when I need to call him….. he is elderly and my aunt Ivel has final stages of Alzheimers under 24 hr home care….. may be going to Danville this weekend. ….. need to see them anyhow.
Billy told me that Granny’s birthday is April 2 and he only knows it because his son Bryan shares the day with his ggma. He also told me that our grandaddy held the infant Billy in May 1950 just before he died…. granny died in early 1960s.I remember that…. both buried at Schoolfield cemetary in Danville
So Hosie, or Hosea, or Hosee ( I’ll let y’all know what the headstone says. 😉 and his new bride lived with her family the first year they were married…… according to family lore it was because the Daltons didn’t approve of him marrying an indian…. (or part indian) girl. Can you determine Larmie’s mother’s maiden name? That could well be the known indian surname we are looking for.
btw….. Gornie is Gomie …….. check the next census and my father, Vernel, and his sisters Ivel and Gloria will be added.
Thank you again…….. You don’t know how much this means to me.
November 3, 2003 at 10:30 pm #8030well…… I skimmed before I posted and misread one part….. Hosie and Larmie lived with HIS parents but it was in Indian Valley……. It was my understanding that all the Daltons lived in Carroll co. When did William Dalton first show up in Floyd co? Maybe William left the other Daltons for some reason…. very interesting stuff…….. whatever we discover.

Martha Simpkins , 19, Va.
Rhoda Bond, 26, Va.
Mary E. Bond, 7, Va.
Armisted H. Bond, 4, Va.
(Rhoda/Rody Bond, is Henry’s dau per 1850 census)
(a probable brother of Henry’s, James H. Simpkins, 34, Va lives nearby. William G. Simpkins named a son after him.)
………………………………………………………………………..
1850 Floyd Co., Va Census, Western Dist. # 15, p.442; 5 Sept., at 903, 903 :

Crockett, 22, Ky.
Floyd (could be “Hays”), 15, Ky.
Sarah J., 13, Ky.
Richard, 11, Ky.
Martha, 10, Ky.
Rachel, 6, Ky.
(The ‘born Ky’ for these folks is incorrect per earlier census records finding them in Va.)
Henry’s age is probably about 45 here, comparing 1840 and 1870 census records.

No online marriage records were found for Richard & Mary “Polly” or for William G. & Eliza, in Floyd Co in the above time periods.

November 3, 2003 at 10:30 pm #8041No online marriage records were found for Richard & Mary “Polly” or for William G. & Eliza, in Floyd Co in the above time periods.
………………..
Taking what you found, I managed to find some stuff myself.
Richard Simpkins …born c1838…… married to Mary Quesenberry on 3-28-1861
William Garland Simpkins….. b 6-1-1864…. d 2-13-1944 … married on 6-9-1884 to Elizabeth Jane Montgomery Duncan (her second marriage)
Eliza was first married on 6-18-1879 to William Riley Duncan, son of Blanch Duncan and Fannie Nester
Eliza was born 1850 ….. died 10-17-1933…… she was the “unlawful daughter” of Tobias L. Phillips and Rachel Montgomery…… her son is McNealy Phillips
William and Eliza are both buried at Capt.George Quesenberry Cemetery in Indian Valley, Va.
Did I do good?? LOL
Thanks again, Bill
November 3, 2003 at 10:30 pm #8042Hey, that IS good.
Where did you find that information?
I had thought that the Quesenberry’s figured in there somewhere only because there were so many of them all around your people and I had seen one of your guys who had a middle initial of “Q”. Looking back in the records, it was William and Delia C. Dalton’s son Lemiel Q., on the 1910 census.
Bill
November 3, 2003 at 10:30 pm #8043Prior to the 1850 census, only the name of the “head of household” was listed on census records, with a stroke count of members of their household by age range.
………
1840 Floyd Co., Va Census, p.182
Henry Simpkins
household contains:
1 male under 5 (Richard)
1 male 5 to 9 (Floyd)
1 male 10 to 14 (Crockett)
1 male 30 to 39 (Henry)
1 female under 5 (Sarah J.)
1 female 5 to 9 (Rhoda/Rody)
1 female 30 to 39 (Elizabeth)
…………………………………………………………..
Floyd Co. was created in 1831 from Montgomery Co.
………….
On page 36 of “A Brief of Wills and Marriages in Montgomery and Fincastle Counties, Virginia, 1733 – 1831”, compiled by Anne Worrell,
“Henry Simpkins (son of Robert) and Elizabeth Duncan, dau of John Duncan Jr., Mar by Jacob Weddle – Oct 2, 1827.”
………….
It’s hard to say with a certainty that the 30 to 39 yr old female shown on the 1840 census is in fact Elizabeth or a second wife, but unless we find evidence of a second wife, guess we’ll have to go on the assumption that she is Elizabeth.
more later,

November 3, 2003 at 10:30 pm #8044Bill says… Where did you find that information?
I had thought that the Quesenberry’s figured in there somewhere
There was a lady in Floyd co who did an incredible amount of work putting info together……. she seemed particularly fond of Tobias Phillips and his many offspring LOL these were people she had compiled. The sites are ….. can’t drop hyperlinks on reply? Ok……. Floyd Co Gen Web can be accessed from Floyd Co Va homepage……. Surname index …… Families of Floyd co.
My cousin is married to a Quesenberry now…. they live outside of Hillsville.
I have searched each of the new names and will post what I have when I got it in coherent order.
A question for whoever said they had list of known and suspected ndn surnames…… can I get access to that list?
Thanks
November 3, 2003 at 10:30 pm #8045Ken,
When Floyd was created from Montgomery Co in 1831, only Henry Simpkins lived in the Western District and turns up in Floyd Co., the majority of Simpkins were still in the area that Montgomery Co retained. Absolom, John Simpkins and several of their sons lived in a section of Montgomery Co that became Pulaski Co in 1839.
1840 Floyd Co data on Henry was posted earlier.
……….relationships will be cleared up later – all listed as white.

next door to William Simpkins is
Nancy Simpson, 50 to 59.
In the 1780 & 1790s records, Simpkins and Simpson are applied to the same people. Probably misspellings or an indexer’s error, but this Nancy could be a Simpkins.

November 3, 2003 at 10:30 pm #8066Dreaminghawk,
This is the rest of what I could find on Simpkins.
James Simpkins (Sr.), b. abt. 1756, is listed as serving in the Virginia Continental Army as a private, and awarded $80 annual allowance. His pension started Nov 19, 1832, age 76, living in Montgomery Co., Va. He’s listed as “died Dec 30, 1833”.
Henry’s grandfather Robert Sr., was born before 1765, so James and Robert Sr are probably brothers.
…………
There are online researchers who have this James confused with another James Simpkins, b.abt.1729, who “married an Indian maid”, and did have a son Robert who served in the Rev.War., but they were born, raised & died in New York state and are not the Montgomery County, Va, Simpkins.
…………
Henry Simpkins was born about 1805 in Va per the 1870 census, but his parents were married in 1807 so someone in the 1870 household just got his age wrong.
Henry’s Montgomery County marriage lists his father as Robert.
As the 1810 census shows, only one Robert has a son who was born in this time period and this is Robert Simpkins Jr, son of Robert Sr., who was probably the brother of James Simpkins.
The earliest I can definitely place James Simpkins in Montgomery Co., Va, is August 6, 1793, when he was appointed the Overseer of the road established from the Seven Mile Tree to the head of the Fall Branch. (source: “Annals of Southwest Virginia.”)
On Feb 2, 1796, James Simpkins, grantor, transferred 14 acres of land on Mill Stone Bottom for $50 to Messenger Lewis. (source: “Annal of Southwest Virginia”.)
However, there is a James “Simpson” in Montgomery Co as early as a Nov 7, 1780 Jury List, and I think this could be James Simpkins but can’t prove it. A John, James & Robert “Simpson” served on that 1780 Jury hearing the case of one Peter Raisor/Razor (one of mine), brought before the court on suspicion of him being an enemy of the U.S. (probably was). (same source as the last two.)
1810 Montgomery Co., Va Census :
p.4 –
Robert Simpkins, Sr = 01201 – 01101.
household contains:
1 male 10 to 16.
2 males 16 to 25.
1 male of 45 and over.
1 female 10 to 16.
1 female 16 to 25.
1 female of 45 and over.
p.11 –
James Simpkins = 11101 – 12001.
household contains:
1 male under 10.
1 male 10 to 16.
1 male 16 to 25.
1 female under 10.
2 females 10 to 16.
1 female of 45 and over.
[Will of James Simpkins probated Jan. 1834. Names wife Patience (nee: Butterfield, who he m’d in 1823, so she’s his 2nd wife),
and children James H., Robert, John (the 3 sons on 1810 census), Catherine (wife of William Elliot), Polly Clore and other daughters not named. (source: Brief of Wills & Marriages of Montgomery & Fincastle Counties, Virginia.)
p.22 –
Robert Simpkins, Jr = 20010 – 00100.
household contains:
2 males under 10. (one must be Henry.)
1 male 26 to 44.
1 female 16 to 25.
[Robert Simpkins Jr married 1st Elizabeth Duncan, Feb 3, 1807. & 2nd Sally Watkins Simpkins on Apr 17, 1829, widow of Lawrence Simpkins, Robert’s cousin who was a son of James) on Apr 17, 1829.]
[James Simpkins’ wife was probably a LAWRENCE and there is a 9 yr old Adam SIMPKINS in the 1850 household of Stephen CHILDRESS, who lived next door to his parents, in whose household are 2 LAWRENCE boys (both mulatto) as well as a HIX (Hicks?), along with a 68 yr Rachel HOWARD. Doesn’t prove anything, but it is an unusual coincidence that Simpkins and Lawrence’s live with the same family and the Lawrence’s are Mulatto.]
On the 1810 census, the house just before Robert Simpkins Jr is
John Duncan Jr, age 16 to 25.
The house just after Robert Jr is
John Duncan Sr., over 45, b. bef. 1765.
On this same page is
Henry Duncan, 26 to 44.
Blanch Duncan (male), 26 to 44.
Thos. Duncan, 16 to 25.

November 3, 2003 at 10:30 pm #8068Dreaminghawk,
Guess I was wrong. Here’s some more Simpkins info.
Robert Simpkins married Macey LAWRENCE, dau of John Lawrence and Levinah __?__, per book “Descendants of Elder John Lawrence of Southwest Virginia….”
Some postings might be of interest to you that are posted at http://genforum.genealogy.com/simpkins
just below the listings of posts to this board, is a “field” titled “message #” or something like that…….
enter the following message number and hit go. Then on to the next message #, etc……
Message numbers:
64 (Daniel Simpkins, b.ca.1744 – James & Robert’s father?)
72 (contains info on a second marriage for Henry Simpkins)
121 (the Bishop connection to the Simpkins.)
469 (ditto the above.)
668 (a Lawson & Simpkins connection.)
675 (list of children of Robert Simpkins Sr. and marr dates)
677 (Will & Land Deeds of Robert Simpkins Sr.)
901 (there must be 3 Robert Simpkins in Montgomery Co.; Robert Sr, his son Robert Jr, and Robert Sr’s son James Harrison Simpkins also had a son named Robert.)
……………
The message numbers that sort one James from the other, are:
73, 77, 91, 130 & 135.
……………
But these do make me wonder if the James, b.ca.1756, could be the son of the James, b.ca.1729 – both of which might have had a son named Robert !
……………
From “Annals of SW Va”, p.241 :
“At a Court held 14th of March 1775…… Vincent Simpkins is set Levy free on account of his being a cripple and unable to pay Levies.” i.e., he’s not able to work on the roads, public endeavors, etc.
Bill
November 3, 2003 at 10:30 pm #8077Eliza was first married on 6-18-1879 to William Riley Duncan, son of Blanch Duncan and Fannie Nester
Bill, your post mentions a Blanch Duncan as a near neighbor of Simpkins……. suppose this is same man?
As you have tracked Simpkins, I have been discovering what a Peyton Place that mountain was. I have been tracking the women and all roads lead to Tobias Phillips……. seems he was quite the philanderer, as was his son “Little Tobe”
As I posted, Eliza Jane is the unlawful daughter of Rachel Montgomery and Tobias L. Phillips. In 1860 and 1870 census she is listed as a Phillips in Tobias L household.
Several interesting things here….. Tobias is not an irish name ….
But perhaps the most interesting thing is something I just noticed….. and this is the direction I will be exploring. The 1870 census shows as a member of the Tobias L Phillips Jr. household
Mima Phillips Born c1792 78 yo b/f
1880 census she is listed as 90 yo b/f boarder
I haven’t dug back any farther yet but at the moment I don’t think Mima is a name…… that’s what we call one of the grandmas.
Black? or just obviously not white?
November 3, 2003 at 10:30 pm #8078Richard Simpkins …born c1838…… married to Mary Quesenberry on 3-28-1861
Mary b c1836 …..don’t have her parents yet but she is listed in 1860 in household of Randolph Phillips…… think she is daughter of Sarah Quesenberry and mother of Dica (Dicy, Disa,Dicia) Sarah has 2 sons that are listed as unlawful sons of Tobias L. Phillips… so is he just my gggrandaddy or also my ggggrandaddy???
That’s not all……. in 1870 census, Rachel Montgomery is listed as Rachel Phillips daughter of James Montgomery and Jane White
Surnames now related…. Dalton, Simpkins, (Simpson), Quesenberry, Duncan, White, Montgomery, Phillips, Brok/Burk, Bond, Hays(?) Lawrence,
Still got more digging to do…… somebody should have written a book about Tobias L. Phillips……. that man got around LOL
