Is it possible that “Simpson” and “Simpkins” might have originated as the same surname?
At the “Blackfoot Cemetery” at the Blackfoot Church in Pike County, Indiana was buried a “Mary Ritchey, wife of Simpson Ritchey”, She was born in the 1770s and died I think it was the 1830s, but I forget the exact dates.
When someones given name is also a surnmae, you tend to think it might be a mother’s maiden name.
I cna not tie my Richey’s to these even tho they both lived in this area one county away from each other during the same time frames, but we “might be” related to them. Likewise I can not tie “Simpkins” and “Simpson” — so this is a very very very — longshot. 🙂

Here’s some things to fill in some of the blanks.
RE: Blanch Duncan & Fanny Nestor; Tobias L. Phillips; Mary Quesenberry; Rachel Montgomery; & the Burk’s and Lawrence’s.
There’s more than one Blanch Duncan and 3 or 4 Tobias Phillips.
1860 Floyd Co., Va Census, Copper Valley P.O., p.555, 26 July,
at 866, 813:
Blanch Duncan, 50, farmer, $1200, $989, Va.
Catherine, 46, Va.
with a bunch of kids including a Blanch Duncan, age 15, not the one you’re looking for, and no William Riley either.
same census, p.566, at 950, 887 :
Blanch Duncan, 27, m, farmer, $0, $100, Va.
Fanny, 24, f, VA.**** (Fanny Nestor, dau of Daniel & Elizabeth?)
Wm. R., 6, m, Va.******* (William Riley Duncan)
Elizabeth, 4, f, Va.
Susan, 4/12, f, Va.
three houses further at 953, 889 :
Tobias Phillips, 26, m, farmer, $1500, $460, Va.
Preston, 29, m, farmer, $1500, $415, Va.
Henry F. Burk, 60, m, Va.
Lucy Burk, 60, f, Va (Tobias L. Phillips Jr’s mother)
(more at end of this post)
same census, p. 567, at 959, 895:
Sarah Quesenberry, 55, f, Farmer, $425, $187, Va.
Fredrick, 28, m, Va.
Sarah, 26, f, Va.
MARY, 24, f, Va. ******* probably same person as below.
Lucy, 21, f, Va.
Martha R., 19, f, Va.
Owen, 15, m, Va.
Enos, 9, m, Va.
at 962, 898 :
Randall (Randolph?) Phillips, 61, m, farmer, $3780, $2033, Va.
Mary, 57, f, Va.
Bryant, 21, m, Va.
Enoch, 19, m, Va.
Noah, 15, m, Va.
Henderson, 12, m, Va.
MARY QUESENBERRY, 24, f, Domestic, Va.
Dica (Quesenberry), 4, f, Va.
……………………………………..
1850 Carroll Co., Va Census, Dist. 11, p.338A, 21 Aug,
at 296, 296 :
James Montgomery, 60, m, shoemaker, $400, NC
Jane, 60, f, NC
George B. Y., 23, m, farmer, $0, NC
Eliza J., 21, f, NC.
RACHEL, 17, f, Va.
(her dau Eliza J., was b. June 1854, per later census)
at 304, 304 :
Robert Montgomery, 77, m, farmer, $834, NC.
Sarah, 64, f, NC.
Elmira, 23, f, Va.
(provided so that you have a cross check if you decide to pursue them into NC. May be an older brother of James.)
same census, p.339B,
Daniel Nester, 45, Va.
Elizabeth Nester, 48, Va.
Francis, 16, f, Va *** (same as marr’d Blanch Duncan?)
Next door to Daniel Nestor is a William Montgomery, 40, Va., & family.
………………………………..
Here’s the line of Tobias L. Phillips Jr, b.abt. 1832/34. and it has some very interesting Virginia origins as well as circumstances.
(there is a book about them !)
(I got 637 matches on Ancestry World Tree, most of them copies, for “Tobias Phillips”.)
John Phillips, b. abt. 1648 England (Wales)
m’d Elizabeth Tobias, b. abt. 1652.
(all of their children are listed as born in Old Rappahannock Co., Va.)
one of their sons Tobias Phillips, b. 12 Jan 1686/87 (old calendar)
in Old Rappahannock Co., Va. He married twice :
1) Margaret LAWRENCE.
2) Hannah GOAD (also GOARD… could be Gourd ?)
These lines come down to Grayson and Montgomery Counties to
William Tobias Phillips Sr, b. 25 Jan 1749/50 (old calendar) in No. Farnham Parish, Richmond Co (formerly Old Rappahannock), Va, who died 1808 Greasy Creek, Grayson Co., Va. He marr’d Mary Margaret Jennings, b. 1753, N. Farnham Parish.
William Tobias Phillips Jr, b. abt. 1770 Pittsylvania Co., Va (son of Wm Tobias and Mary Jennings), marr’d Elsie B. HENSON, b. 1769 Pittsylvania Co., Va. One of their dau’s Francis, married on 29 Jan 1807 Patrick Co., Va., Lewis DALTON, b. 1786 Grayson Co. You’re gettin them from all sides, now ! )
Tobias L. Phillips Sr, b. 1793 Montgomery Co, Va; d. Sept 1832 Floyd Co., Va., (son of Wm Tobias and Mary Jennings) marr’d abt 1816 or earlier, Lucy COX (Cocks), b. 26 Aug 1804 Beuford, Montgomery Co., Va.
[Per Cheri Astrahan, astrahan@mminternet.com , Lucy marr’d 2) Henry Burke on 3 Dec 1842 Floyd Co.
Astrahan also purports that Lucy marr’d 3) Peter **** (Cox?) 20 Dec 1847 Carroll Co., but this must be a different Lucy Burke because per the 1860 census listed above, Lucy and Henry Burk are living with Lucy’s son Tobias (Jr).
Lucy Cox Phillips was the dau of Ambrose Cox, b. aft. 1761, and Sarah REED, b. bef. 1775. Per Ambrose Cox’s Will, he disinherited all of Tobias and Lucy’s children. Ambrose was the son of Matthew Cox, b. 19 June 1745 Essex Co., Va., and Susan Lucy Dickerson, b.abt. 1740 Louisa Co., Va. The Will’s date is not listed by Astrahan.]
Tobias L. Phillips Sr and Lucy Cox are the parents of Tobias L. Phillips, Jr., b. abt. 1832, the rogue of Indian Valley.

November 3, 2003 at 10:30 pm #8082Vance,
Could be, but in the specific case of the “James Simpson might be the same as James Simpkins”, I think it might just be a spelling error by the original record keeper or by the compiler or even by the book’s editor.
My general rule of thumb is not to ignore a name that differs only by vowels added/substracted or has one consonant change – they’re often misspellings.

How do I find this book? There are 2 books that shed light on Floyd co that I have……. The Man Who Moved a Mountain by Richard C Davids and the Memoirs of Sidna Allen (The true story of the Incident at Hillsville courthouse)
Thanks for the link to Simpkins page…….. quite interesting
Also google-searched Tobias Phillips and put in favs for later.

Notes for Tobias L. Phillips Jr.
According to Elza Cox, Tobias never married, but had children by at least five different women. Note that the first woman he reportedly had children by, Sally Cox Quesenberry, was his aunt, the sister of his mother, when he was only 13 and she was 45! The third woman he had children by, Nantie Phillips, was the daughter of a marriage between his double first cousin and his second cousin. His fourth family not published by request. The fifth woman he had children by, Sally Cox, was his first cousin on the Cox side, and his second cousin on the Phillips side.
On p. 14, The Genealogy of William Tobias Phillips, Elza Cox writes “Tobias L. Phillips, Jr. … died in 1890. However on his tombstone located in the Cox Family Cemetery on the William Moten Cox property at Indian Valley it reads: Tobias Phillips, Sr., born Feb 19, 1932 died Dec 19, 1895.” Elza does not mention his source for the 1890 date of death.
Census Notes for Sarah (“Sally”) Cox
1860 census of Floyd Co., Virginia, lists as family #959:
Quesenberry, Sarah, 55, farmer; Frederick, 28; Sarah, 26; Mary, 24; Lucy, 21; Martha R., 19; Owen, 15; Enos, 9. All born in Va.
(Frederick through Martha are children of Sarah and George. According to Elza Cox, Owen and Enos are children of Sarah and Tobias L. Phillips.)

I suspect this “book” is just an online published family tree. Here are 2 more parties who researched the Phillips’ lines, maybe one of them can steer you to the “book” if it exists:

Robyn Blackwell Osborn robyn2@harborside.com

November 3, 2003 at 10:30 pm #8108Thank you Bill for the incredible amount of info you have found for me…… this will take me a while to sort and write up …… and You have opened so many avenues to pursue. I am eternally grateful.
That may have to wait in my file for a while because I may well have been barking up the wrong tree…….. it seems another branch of my family may hold the key……… on my mother’s side.

Where was this information found? It seems odd anybody would be writing that down somewhere. You know, that sounds like a deep dark secret nobody would tell. How did it get into the public record? Odd too that a woman of 45 would be having a baby at all. Just curious
November 3, 2003 at 10:30 pm #8122His fourth family not published by request.
This would be Rachel Montgomery…… mother of Eliza Jane Duncan Simpkins
Linda, In answer to your questions…… I found the info by searching GenWeb …… Cox family….. Elza Cox is who I quoted.
Tobias never rejected or denied any of his many children…… many sources show that. …… and back in the days when no birth control was used, almost all women continued to have babies until menopause….. or something broke….. or they died in childbirth……. 45 was not at all uncommon.

Eliza Jane Duncan Simpkins & William Garland Simpkins are my grandparents. She’s also is known by Elizabeth Jane Phillips/Montgomey/Simpkins I have a picture of her, and my mom Juanita Simpkins/Curtis looks alot like her.
Bill Childs: how do you know all this information about the Simpkins family, are you related?
I just bought 4 books from someone on the Quesenberry side of the family last month. My sister and I visited her while in Va Bch Va. ALOT of information in it. She is like a distant cousin to me.
The families that you had talked about did alot of marrying into the family either by being cousins etc. Tree don’t branch too far if you know what I mean.
🙂
November 3, 2003 at 10:30 pm #18867Welcome, Tina Rae,
I looked them up in reference sources; online and published, public sources. Primary sources are usually census and marriage records. I’m not related to this specific line that I know of, but one can never be too sure 🙂

Bill,
I have attached a family sheet with information on it. Also Princeton is listed in the 1910 census as a prisoner, what I heard before he married my grandmom he served time for shooting a man I will need to look for his name. I heard there is a newspaper clipping of it but I have not been able to find it. After he got out he married my g.mom, when she passed he remarried and lived the rest of his life in Titusville Florida area. He had 3 children with her (Alma)
My grandmom is buried along with 3 dead children somewhere in Floyd, I have had a hard time finding out where, it seems a road goes through it and she is on the opposite side. I would love to know her full birthday and death date also possible what she died from.
Also there is a web site about all the Simpkins I am related to.
