A Groundbreaking and Community Partners Recognition Ceremony on Sept. 18 marked the transition from the planning stage to construction of the Haliwa-Saponi Indian Tribe’s Veterans Memorial.
The event was held at the Chief W.R. Richardson Tribal Government Complex on Hwy. 561 in Hollister. The Veterans Memorial will be situated between the Tribal Government Complex and the former Tribal Council Building.
Jewel Bissonnette (CWO-3, USMC-retired), chair of the Haliwa-Saponi Veterans Memorial Committee, indicated that the committee and community devoted five years to the planning process before reaching the point of holding a groundbreaking ceremony.
“This Haliwa-Saponi Veterans Memorial is dedicated to honoring and celebrating our Tribal veterans, past and present, for their selfless service and sacrifice, and moves us closer to ensuring that our Tribal veterans’ legacy of valor and service is never forgotten. It is truly a dream come true,” she said.
Bissonnette, in speaking with the newspaper last week, described the Veterans Memorial as a memorial grounds for reflection. A granite monument will be situated within a circular brushed cement patio. The monument will be surrounded by brick markers engraved with the names, branch of service and service period of people in the community.
