I am seeking information on the Harris, Goins, & Moore families of Rockingham & Stokes County, North Carolina They lived near Sandyridge & Stoneville.
My Ancestors were:
George Walter Goins (Bunk) married Sarah Frances Grogan
George Walter Goins Parents: John Walter Goins
Francis Bridgman (Bridgeman?) Frankie
Luther Smith Richardson married Mary Jane Harris
I believe Mary Jane’s parents might have been:
Alexander Harris and Phereoby Moore from Goinstown
Any information on these families would be appreciated.

January 18, 2006 at 2:48 pm #18724Hi, Linda,
Without dates to compare, are you referring to 1880 Rockingham Co., NC Richardsons: Luther, 26; Jane, 22; Littia, 3 and Joseph, 10 months?
And to the 1870 Rockingham Co Alexander Harris, 55; and “Firebe” 47; next door to William and Margaret Moore with Frankie and Bunk Goings a few doors away?
If so, I’d agree that Jane is most likely Alexander and Firebe’s daughter. I didn’t find any other Mary or Mary J. or Jane in 1870 that would fit better.

January 18, 2006 at 2:48 pm #18730Hi Bill, Yes you are right on target, I am referring to: 1880 Rockingham Co., NC Richardsons: Luther, 26; Jane, 22; Littia, 3 and Joseph, 10 months?
And to the 1870 Rockingham Co Alexander Harris, 55; and “Firebe” 47; next door to William and Margaret Moore with Frankie and Bunk Goings a few doors away?
I have very little information on any of them and would love to know all I can about Jane Harris Richardson and her parents Alexander Harris, Firebe Harris, William and Margaret Moore and Frankie and Bunk Goings. I am related to them and I’m intensely interested in learning about them. I am so tickled to finally learn something of them. I have wondered about Bunk & Frankie ever since my Mother passed away and I found the stories that she wrote. Does it say who their parents and siblings were? I have much information on my Grandma’s family the Richardsons, but very little about the Goins, Harris’s, & Moore’s. BTW, where did they live?
Would Firebe be the daughter of William & Margaret Moore?
January 18, 2006 at 2:48 pm #18731Hi Bill, You mentioned before Bunk Goings and Frankie. Do you know Bunk’s first name? Was it John Walter or George Walter? George Walter Goins nickname was Bunk, but he married Sarah Grogan. Perhaps his Father’s nickname was also Bunk or
Frankie & Bunk were Mother & son?

January 18, 2006 at 2:48 pm #18765It appears to me that George Walter Goin/Goins is the same as Bunk. See what you think.

(This William is probably the William living with Frankie in 1870.
This doesn’t prove William is John’s brother and that Johnson & Jane are their parents, but I’d be willing to bet that this is the case. )
Johnson/Jonson Going appears on the 1820, 1830 & 1840 Rockingham Co, NC census.

January 18, 2006 at 2:48 pm #18769Bill, THANK YOU SO MUCH! your information has been very helpful indeed!
I did find information on a Frances Bridgmon that married a William Going:
“William Going was married to Frances Bridgmon December 4, 1827, according to “Rockingham County, North Carolina Marriages, 1787-1850,” record 1091, bondsman Andrew Martin, witnesses P. Gibson and Jeremiah Martin, Bond No. 119744. Of William Going and Frances Bridgmon Going nothing more is known.”
Perhaps she was an earlier ancestor than was written in the family Bible.
Thanks again,
Linda

January 18, 2006 at 2:48 pm #18834Saponi1 and Hitchnpst Linda,
Yours’ are the same HARRIS/RICHARDSON/RICHARD family.
The person looking for the Thomas RICHARDSON/Martha BULLINS/BULLIN family (newly posted) is looking for the family of the older brother of Luther RICHARD/RICHARDSON, son of Joseph RICHARDSON & Martha Jane HARRIS, as you probably suspected.
Bill
BTW, Claiborne is not forgotten 🙂
January 18, 2006 at 2:48 pm #18839Bill, I am sure you know, however there are atleast three Claiborn Going with all the spelling variants and a few Laborns.
January 18, 2006 at 2:48 pm #18843I have a tremondous amount of information on the Richardson family including Thomas, Luther, Mary Frances, Joseph & Martha Jane that goes back beyond the Revolutionary War to the 1600’s. I received this information from 2 geneaologists on the board at Rockingham and Stokes County Geneaological society, which are the GGranddaughters of Thomas and his sister Mary Frances Richardson. I am also in contact with another descendant of Thomas ‘s. I am the GGranddaughter of their brother Luther S. Richardson.
Joseph & Martha Jane (Taylor) Richardson’s children:
Thomas M Richardson……………….. Aug.8, 1851-May 27, 1941
Luther Smith Richardson……………..Oct. 9, 1853 -Sept.27,1917
Mary Frances (Martin) Richardson…Dec.16, 1855-Nov.23, 1940
Children of Luther & Mary Jane Richardson:
Melissa Louise (nickname Lula) Richardson Nelson
Joe Henry Richardson
Charles Artaway Smith Richardson
Callie Caroline Elizabeth Susan Richardson Harris
James Alexander Richardson
Mary Jane Richardson (nickname Gene) b. February 10, 1890
Minnie Lee Richardson Goins – 10/20/1893-08/08/1964
Hessie Mae Richardson Mahaffey b. 03/04/1896-07/13/1973
I have a story that my Aunt wrote about Joseph Richardson’s family while he was fought in the Civil War. The geneaological Society of Rockingham & Stokes County just published it in December 2005.
My Mother wrote a story about Luther & Mary Jane Richardson and also about George (Bunk) & Mary Jane (Harris) Goins.
I would be happy to share any information that I have.

January 18, 2006 at 2:48 pm #18844Bill, I am interested in the ancestors of George W. (Bunk) Goins. I noticed that you mentioned Claiborn Going. Would he be an ancestor of Bunks?
Linda
January 18, 2006 at 2:48 pm #18845I don’t know if he’s related.
With the exception of his marriage to Elizabeth Bird in 1833, I haven’t found him there.

January 18, 2006 at 2:48 pm #18909Hi Bill you have provided such good information, but I do have some questions.
I am wondering why I keep seeing the dates 1849-1924 for Luther S. Richardson, Where did these dates come from?
The dates for Luther Smith Richardson are different than I have.
I was sent a copy of his death certificate that states
October 9, 1853 – September 27, 1917. The cause of death stated General Paralysis.
Also, I keep seeing my Grandma listed as Susan. Her name was Minnie Lee Richardson born Oct. 20, 1893, but her sister Callie had a middle name of Susan.
This is so much fun learning about my ancestors.
Thank you!
Linda
