November 10, 2010 at 8:00 pm #35536Hi Debra,
I also have a John Rickman in my line, who was from Rowan County, NC. The Rickmans were very mobile, and seemed to be moving between Halifax and Patrick Counties in VA, and Rowan Co. NC. According to Richard Haithcock’s research, my line was tied to the Occaneechi-Sapoini Tribe (Haithcock, Richard L. (1995). Occaneechi, Saponi, and Tutelo of the Saponi nation : the Piedmont Catawaba. Xenia, Ohio).
• Father – John Rickman June 09, 1795 – August, 1870 • Born in Rowan County, North Carolina • Married August 22, 1815 in Halifax County, Virginia • Listed on the 1810 Occaneechi- Saponi Heads of Families and others, Patrick County, Virginia – 1810 census • Mother – Lucinda “Lucy” Blanks 1795 – August, 1870 • Born in Halifax County, Virginia • Children – Thomas Robert Rickman 1821 – ???? • Born in Unknown County, Virginia, and likely died in Russell County, VA • Married January 2, 1841 in Stokes County, NC (North Carolina Marriages) – William C. Rickman October 21, 1826 – ???? • Born in Patrick County, Virginia • Married Emily Boyd on October 10, 1854 in Patrick County, Virginia (Rootsweb, 2009) John Rickman’s parents were Jesse Riley Rickman of Kittiwan Plantation in Charles City, VA and Mary Trantham of Rowan Co. NC, who was called a local Native healer in family oracles.

November 10, 2010 at 8:00 pm #35544Hi Debra,
Yes, I also found Mariah Goin married John Rickman on September 16, 1849 (Rockingham County, North Carolina Marriages, 1787-1850). As to John’s parent’s, there is a record in the FamilySearch.org database showing John Rickman and Nancy Whitaker in Buncombe, NC, who look like good candidates. As far as the Cherokees go, they were very mobile, and were in every part of North Carolina at times. I have Tsali Cherokee ties from when they were in Eastern NC, and my wife’s William Duck (kin to Bluford Duck and the Cook Gang) walked off the Cherokee Reservation and married Maggie Callis in Totero, Southampton, VA after the Civil War. When I first started my research, I quickly found that my Native Ancestors were not always where the History Books placed them.

November 10, 2010 at 8:00 pm #35548Hi Debra,
I wouldn’t worry too much about the computer, as you seem to be communicating fine here.
This is just a hunch, but seeing the Peters makes me suspect you’re in my line, descending through John (1765-????) or Peter Rickman (1760-????). My line is through Jesse Riley Rickman (May 2, 1770 – March 10, 1860). If this is correct, your line should look something like this- (I’ve not run the other lines, but I would try to see if there is connection to your John and Mariah.)
Rickman – Reynolds in Princess Anne County, VA
• Father
– Robert Rickman 1683 – ????
• Born in Hampshire, England
• Married Tamara Reynolds about 1703.
• Mother
– Tamara Reynolds ???? – ????
• Married Robert Rickman about 1703.
• Children
– Dr. William Rickman 1731 – February 16, 1783
• Born in Princess Anne County, VA
• Married Katherine Unknown, then Elizabeth Harrison about 1772.
(FamilySearch, 2010)
Rickman – Unknown – Harrison in Charles City, VA
• Father
– Dr. William Rickman 1731 – February 16, 1783
• Born in Princess Anne County, VA
• Married Katherine Unknown, then Elizabeth Harrison about 1772.
• Owned Kittiwan Plantation in Charles City
• Mother
– Katherine Unknown ???? – < 1772
• Married Dr. William Rickman
• Children
– Peter Rickman 1760 – ????
• Born in England
– John Rickman 1765 – ????
• Born in England
– Tamara Rickman 1768 – ????
• Likely born in Charles City, VA
– Jesse Riley Rickman May 2, 1770 – March 10, 1860
• Born in Kittewan, Charles City, VA
• Married Mary Trantham on January 10, 1791 in Rowan County, NC.
• Known as a pioneer of the Great Smoky Mountains in Western North Carolina.

November 10, 2010 at 8:00 pm #35549Thanks four cats, Really the only thing I do know is they lived in rockingham and stokes county and the rickman line is where the native american ancestry comes in. My g-mother jennie hickman (rickman) married joe henry richardson and on the 1930 census listed as finnie richardson she is listed as indian. Her father peter rickman is listed as mulato on all census. he was born abt 1849 and his father john rickman abt 1823-1826. debra
November 10, 2010 at 8:00 pm #35550Hi Debra,
Your ancestors being listed as Native or Mulatto, along with what I’ve found on the Rickman surname in my research remove any doubt they were Native. I would document as much of your line as possible as you go. If you are attempting to connect to a tribe, I would definitely suggest sending Forest Hazel in this forum a note, who is with the Occaneechi-Saponi Tribe. I have spoken to her in the past on my Rickman and Corn lines which are tied to her tribe.
One thing that is making this search hard for you is what I call the “Stokes County Melting Pot”, where many different pieces of tribes and families settled for a spell and then moved on with little documentation. I spent over a year unraveling three Barnes lines which crossed in Stokes. I then found a Barnes – Turner marriage down in Rowan, connecting my Tuscarora line to the Cheroenhaka Tribe.

February 26, 2022 at 1:13 pm #66711Hello to anyone still out there…? I am Junior Loyas Harris’s granddaughter. He is the son of Fletcher Harris & Lula/Lulu Ann Hickman Harris. Lula’s mother and father were Peter Rickman and Mazariah Rickman. Jennie Richardson is my great grand aunt. I’m hoping that someone has some information that can help?
March 1, 2022 at 6:25 am #66718Hi Kimberly,
What information are you looking for? The genealogy of Fletcher and Lula Harris, or family history regarding these lines?
There is also this thread on the SaponiTown forum https://saponitown.com/topic/hickman-family/

September 29, 2022 at 4:28 am #66859Thank you so much! Finally made it back in. I am actually searching both Lula Hickman/Rickman’s line as well as Fletcher’s line. I must admit that both have given me some great difficulty. It would appear that a lot of Lula’s is already here. As for Fletcher’s, not so much. This is what I know…
Fletcher Harris (great grandfather)
Calvin Harris (his father)
Alexander Harris (his father)
James Harris (here I am unsure of who his father is with certainty. )Lula Ann Hickman/Rickman (Great grandmother)
Mazariah Rickman (her mother)
Mariah Bridgeman Goins (her mother)
Polly Goins (her mother)I do have Champain Gibson as a great x5 grandfather.
The major brick wall (as if I don’t have enough) is John Hickman married to Polly Goins Rickman/Hickman. I cannot find his parents.
