So from what i was reading the Saponi are also called Blackfoot? Okay i’m confused here. So when identify ourselves we are actually Saponi but other nation’s that band together make up the Saponi Nation (Tutelo etc..), but the Eastern Blackfoot are actually Siouan technically? So if that’s the case why not identify with being of Siouan decent? Maybe I should read the information page all over again..because I’m confused here. Another question here with beadwork/quillwork is the Eastern Blackfoot geometric/floral the same as the Blackfeet in Montana?Or since they are Eastern mostly use Floral patterns? This is going to be last question for today, is the Blackfoot (Blood etc..) anywhere related to the Eastern Blackfoot or are they related to the Blackfeet in Montana? Sorry if this is too many questions here.
February 28, 2004 at 7:25 pm #9073Welcome, thanks for joining our forum. I’ll try to answer your questions.
The Blackfoot ID that’s found in so many families east of the Mississippi seems to point to the VA/NC Piedmont Siouan. These were a number of tribes originally, but the white government and the historians began referring to them all generically as the Saponi. Not all people who can be traced back to the Saponi have the Blackfoot ID in their families, not at all. But where you find the Blackfoot ID you generally find names and locations of families felt to be Saponi. Does that make sense?
The Blackfoot in Montana are Algonquin and not at all related to the “Other Blackfoot” we’re researching, so I wouldn’t use Montana Blackfoot patterns at all. From the artifacts that have been found the patterns for VA/NC Piedmont Siouan are, well, Siouan, mostly geometric.
The Eastern Blackfoot are what we’re talking about.
If this seems to explain your family’s origins, then you would be correct to follow a Siouan motif in your regalia. If you look at some of the older posts in “Material Culture” click the drop down box so it goes back to the beginning, not just the last 30 days, and you’ll find some threads that have pictures attached.
What names are in your family, and where did they live?
