I have seen little written on this forum about Saponi churches. The Sappony Church in Dinwiddie County on Sapony Church Road near McKenney VA. Sources say it was founded in 1725-26
The first reference I’ve seen is the May 30th 1828 Richmond Enquirer:
“Dr Ducachet, Mr. Syme, and myself then passed on to Sapony Church where I preached on Saturday, and on Sunday, assisted by two clergymen just named, I admitted to the priesthood the Rev. John Grammer. Dr Ducachet preached the ordination sermon, after which I administered the Lord’s Supper, and confirmed nine persons. In the afternoon of the Sabbath, The Rev. Mr. Syme preached; we then bid the people farewell.
After the performance of my duties in Dinwiddie…”The July 4th 1864 Fayetteville Semi-Weekly Observer refers to the Battle of Sappony Church (June 28th 1864):
“GREENSBORO, July 2 – The Richmond Enquirer of 2d is received. It contains details of the cavalry fight near Saponi Church and Reame’s Station between Gens. Hampton, Fitz Lee and Mahone, and Wilson and Speare’s raiders, resulting in the complete rout of the latter. ”
This is near Stony Creek, Sussex County VA on Concord Sappony Road, and refers to the Sappony Meeting House established in 1773 that later became the Sappony Baptist Church. No doubt after many Quakers moved North around the time of the Fugitive Slave Act of 1793.
1890 and 1891 Journals of the Episcopal Church, Diocese of Virginia refers to Saponi Church, Dinwiddie

Sappony Branch arises about a mile east of the present town of McKenney on Highway Number 1, south of the town of Dinwiddie. Near this point was built in 1727 Old Sappony Church, where Protestant Episcopal services still are held. About a mile south of the old church, on a slight elevation on the east side of the road, stands a two story residence formerly occupied by Gardner Ledbetter (1786-1866), a great grandson of the original Richard and wife Hanna. https://www.seekingmyroots.com/members/files/G004304.pdf

Double wow. Blackfoot cemetery is said to be haunted.

The historical marker is very interesting. My family was from Kentucky at that point, traveling to Illinois. The story involved about the Indians telling them where to bury the lady who’d died could be a sanitation of a group of Blackfoot-descended people, trying to ‘pass’ who wanted to leave a momento of that side of the family. In the journey westward that took several generations I noticed the family always stopped where there were remnants of Siouan people.

June 2, 2024 at 8:22 pm #67307TechTeach has made several posts here about the Blackfoot Cemetery in Pike County IN. Given my family’s history in Indiana, I’ve looked at in detail at that cemetery and who rests there. Although none of my direct ancestors are in Pike or Gibson Counties, almost all of mine started in Randolph and Wayne counties and moved West and North.
TechTeach has posted about tracing Marvel and Prettyman lines from Blackfoot Town DE to the Blackfoot Cemetery in Indiana.
One user posted about their English line buried there

This is a thread about the cemetery

The Skinner surname is one that caught my attention because it was one of three middle names of my grandmother’s grandfather, who passed our Blackfoot oral history. It seems history is sometimes passed through these lines by preserving surnames as middle names or sometimes first names. Years ago I started an analysis of the surnames in the Blackfoot Cemetery. Your reply motivated me to finish it this morning. These are about 900 interments in the Blackfoot Cemetery and over 200 surnames if you include maiden names. These are the top 100 surnames (3 or more ancestors):
