Hello All, Well Coharie Roy, you are right about the Hardin family intermarrying with the local Indian people,I have never seen a more mixed group of “white” people ever than when I did some research with the Hardin family assc.! In the 1830-40 Tn. census these 3 men were found not far from each other, atleast I assume they were but it gave no record of land or location where they resided. Also James married Priscilla Carey and that name rarely shows up in that area of Tn, but James’ first boy Melford may have been named for his relative Melford Carey that was working on a road crew with the Hardin boys at the same time. One very interesting name there is shortened from Little Berry Man, to Berman Hardin and this says so much about who he ,I’d say. Anyway Melfords daughter is my g grandmother. The Carey family shows up in the early Moroavian books as guides into the north GA. area and were giudes atleast as far as Spring Place Ga. I have a book read on tape re. this. Thanks for the posting Roy and the space to do it Linda. Best to All, Tom
Hey Linda, well you are obviously better than I at those types of conversations.
I think that most of us on this forum has encountered these types of people, some of us have them as realtives!
I still think that a map showing some of these migrations would be in these peoples faces!
Anyway, Best wishes to all!
perhaps there is a connection between the groups heading into that area, it seams like too much of a coincidence to be just that.
I have seen several times where Indian agents were mixed blood people.
There is a great deal of stories in my family and Barbs of our family members being in Indian country, and going through healing ceremonies etc. Thanx so mush for that, you never know it may lead to something much bigger.
Linda I posted a message on the thread that contains trhe story of the big dipper.
The algonquin Blackfoot are totally different from the sioux people in language and coustoms.
The Blackfoot here are not related culturally to the Sioux unless you consider both of them plains people.
Blackfoot is as closely related as the Saponi are to the Cherokee.
Hey Tech, the Ho Chunk, used to be called the Winnebago, and that is one group that is in language anyway closely related to the Tutelo, interesting maybe there are ceremonies etc that might be close,,, you never know.
I certainly agree with both of you, the material on the Ho Chunk, looks like a great source.
The shirts that the men are wearing are like the shirts that would have been very common to our not so distant ancestors.
I find it very interesting that all 3 of our families were in the same general area, really thought provoking.
Linda you mentioned Occams razor, this is the first time that I have heard or read anyone use this term in order to support our research, thanks for doing so.
There was some time back a woman that posted a story on this site she went by the name of “Moma Bear”, we should compare her story to some of the other stories perhaps the 3 groups that we’ve been talking about here.
What ever happened to this Lady and is she still in the ‘ hood?
Thanx for the great posts.
Hello All, I may or may not have said, that when one of my ancestors were first counted in the census, about 1840 he was black, in 1860 he was mollatto, and in 1900 he was white! So my guess is that they were Indians just being miss Id-ed, or that they were just very ratially mixed and they were getting pigeon holed.Tom.
Hey Barry nice to see you are here!
The one name that iam very surprized to see listed is Darden, this is a very classic lower MS river valley name with almost exclusive Indian connexions.
I know that many of the eastern seaboard tribes, when dienfranchised by VA/NC moved enmasse to La/ Tx and are still there.
Iam sure we’ll eventually be hearing from them.
Hello I’d look at Chickasaw since both of those consonant/sounds are found in the Muskogean languages, there is a chief that had a similar sounding name. Chickasaws owned east TN prior to dislocations etc. BTA, Tom.
Now this is going way back…… I’d like to see some references to the availabilityt on “The great Trading path”, some of these videos etc may just sell there.
