Native American genealogy research from the Piedmont of NC & VA
Forrest and Linda,
I may be going out on a limb here but let me skip forward a century and see if you guys see the same picture that I do.
Turners, several listed on the last known Nottoway census in the early 1800’s. Turners marry into the Poythress and Peters lines. Poythress believed to be stemming from the Prince George County group and Peters to be from the Surry County Group.
Artis/Artist, known Nottoway names with Sykes. Look at your census records for Wilson Co, NC Blackcreek District, you will see the Poythress/Turner/Peters/Scotts lines from Northampton living along with the Artis/Artists. Am I wrong in guessing that the “Cheranauka” absorbed into the Saponi group further back than we originally thought??
I am finding all of this new information that we dug up rather interesting. Especially this tid bit on Robert, brother of Peter Poythress, fur trader and son of John Poythress, sent to talk with the Nottoway.
Would appreciate some feedback.
