I am trying to trace down my family tree. I know that I have blackfoot indian, but would like to know how much. I know it is from my fathers side of the family, but we have been estranged for years. My fathers name is Joseph Lee Mackey Jr. He lived in Michigan for years. any idea how to find out about this.
August 22, 2004 at 4:30 pm #10712I know there are Mackey’s with Indian descent living in prime real estate for the tribes we believe are behind our Blackfoot ID because my husband’s family’s lived next door to them for generations. We also know that a number of these Indian families went to MI, some leaving some good documentation. I’d encourage you to do some standard genealogical work on this line and see what comes up. There are some very good genealogical researchers here who may be able to help.
August 22, 2004 at 4:30 pm #10729I did just find out that my fathers’ father did move to michigan from tennessee. But that is all the info that I could gather.
August 22, 2004 at 4:30 pm #10734Tennessee is a common route from Virginia. Have you tried this side in the census and other records?
August 22, 2004 at 4:30 pm #10852Welcome Angelee,
Not enough to attempt a guess, but is this the Joseph Lee Mackey, b. 2 Mar 1925, d. 15 July 1995 in River Rouge (Detroit suburb), Wayne Co., Mich.? What was his father’s name?

August 22, 2004 at 4:30 pm #10946My father was born in March of 1950. He is still living in CA. My grandfather Joseph lee mackey sr. I do not know of his living dates, but I do know that he lived near a lake in MI.
August 22, 2004 at 4:30 pm #10952Mackey surname was once common among the Indian descendants living around Lake Mattamuskeet in Hyde Co. NC

Since your father was born in 1950, there won’t be any records to find unless you send off for his birth certificate in the county in which he was born – if you can determine that county (probably Wayne Co., Mi., next to Lake St.Clair – same as Detroit). That may be your only option unless you contact him directly. A birth certificate would give you his parents’ names and his parents’ birth certificates would give you their parents’ names. The info might be worth the couple of bucks it would cost you…… or just call him. I don’t know how else you would get the necessary information to start the trace back into the past. Wish it was easier.
