Yes, Mourning was suppose to have been a Native American. I also suspect that Edmon was at least one quarter.
Are you awear that Mourning remarried after EdmonBabe died in the coal minning accident? she married a Unthank. She is buried under the name of Mona Unthank. She and Babe are not buried in the same cemetery.

January 5, 2005 at 4:14 am #12829Yes. I was aware that she married again to an UNTHANK. I was also under the impression that Edmonds father was the one that was referred to as “Babe” Day.
January 5, 2005 at 4:14 am #12831Any idea why she used Mona instead of Mourning?

January 5, 2005 at 4:14 am #12836I have no idea why she used the name Mona. I do know that she used the name Mourning while she was married to Edmon. Mourning’s granddaughter told me that she always referred to her 2nd husband as Mr. Unthank………never used his given name.
Beaty could have been called “Babe” too. He always signed his name “Baty”. I suspect that the name “Babe” had some meaning…………….because Lloyd called one of his sons “Babe” too.
The Napier’s and the Garrett’s are related. Based on the research that I have done and pictures that I have seen, both families were at least part Native.
I can trace the Day family back no further then Nancy (1840). It took years to find the names of all of Beaty’s children……..because Hiram and Edmon weren’t in his household. I believe that the middle initial in Edmon’s name is H. for Howard. I have a letter that he wrote to my grandfather. Edmon signed hid name E.H. Day.

Is it possible that another ethnic group could be involved in this equation? Lots of ethnic groups gravitated towards the mines. The mountains were a very popular place for anyone of an ethnic background other than European to hide. Hispanic, Italian…etc.

January 5, 2005 at 4:14 am #12861Hi:
Yes, other groups were probably involved. I have tried to research Nancy Day through Melungeon lines as well as Native American. I have also researched slave records.
Some of Newton Days family married Italians who worked in the mines. Beaty Day’s daughter married a Harber………I believe that family was German. At this point I have ruled nothing out!!!!!
Please tell me exactly who you are looking for and how you are connected to the Day family. If I have any information I will be happy to share with you.

January 5, 2005 at 4:14 am #12874Well, hello cousin. I have been looking for cousins for a long time!!!!!!! So glad that we have finally “met”…………You have a lot of cousins in Pineville…..through Edmon and Mourning’s daughter Rebecca.
I will email you at your home address and maybe we can get down to business and solve the mystery of our Day family.

January 5, 2005 at 4:14 am #12878I am glad to hear that I have cousins on my mothers side of the family. I had ran into dozens from my fathers side of the family tracing their family lines.
I think that a group effort is exactly what we will need to solve our mystery.
I look forward to hearing from you.
