Bill,
I can not for the life of me remember if I’ve already brought this up and asked you about it or not. It was the first thing on my mind when I woke up thius morning.
I came across some Hodges info. at http://members.cox.net/legacyweb/i91.htm
Could Mary Hodges be the daughter of Amos Hodges and Judith Gentry?
Judith Gentry’s parents being;
Joseph Gentry, b. about 1728, Hanover County, Virginia and died about 1813 in Surry County, NC. It says, Patriotic Service in Revolutionary War.
Agnes Shelton, b. unknown and died about Feb. 1826, but doesn’t say where.
You are so right these folks are so intermixed and mingled about that it really gets very mind boggling! Let me know if you think I am way off coarse here. I’m sure I may be, but I was brain storming on my “waking” mind this morning.;) Love & Light, Lynella.
February 23, 2005 at 4:52 pm #13804Bill,
Or, could it be the Mary (Polly) Chambers Hodges I found last week in the Warrick County Library? There was not much info on her. What I found, Kerry has the photo copies of.
I looked on http://www.us-gen.org/in/warrick/marriages/marriageho.htm
this morning and found one
Hodges, James B. married to
Polly Ann Chambers, March 9th 1854.
When I placed the name in the search it came up Mary Polly Ann, but as you can see it just says Polly Ann as the marriage record. Since I’m brainstorming, I’ll have to see if any of these dates match up after I get home today.
🙂 Thank you for putting up with me!;) Love & Light, Lynella.
February 23, 2005 at 4:52 pm #13808She’s probably the dau of Gentry Hodges and Mary “Polly” Staton….. we just can’t prove it. 🙂
Your second example doesn’t work because the Polly Hodges Reed you’re looking for died before 1850 – have the bible reference of her death – just not at hand.
February 23, 2005 at 4:52 pm #13809🙂 Ahh! See, I didn’t know that! Or, did I? Darn, I’ll have to dig even deeper than I thought. I didn’t think the second one was possible, but I thought I’d throw it in while I was asking stupid questions!;) So, why can’t we prove it? Warrick County stinks, or what? No birth record? No Social Sec. number? Did they have those then? See, tells ya’ how much I know! 😀 This is why I refer everyone to you! I mean, I have everyone else she’s related to, her siblings I think. What can I do? I would ask Kerry, but who knows where he’s gotten off to. He’s still sick too. I get to wait till next week now to see about my surgery. So, I figure I have about half of that week to look into Mary Hodges. What hasn’t been covered? :p I know, you’re telling me you’ve already done it all, aren’t you. But, surely there is something left…..Something we missed somewhere. Hmmmm! Love & Light, Lynella.
February 23, 2005 at 4:52 pm #13810Bill,
🙂 You’re right, I knew that! I went to your Dello Hodges post and printed off all the pertinent info. (again.) That was a lot easier than going through the stack of unfiled papers :p (just like these) stacked on the pool table. I really have to get my act together don’t I! I gotta’ stop having so much fun and get serious again! Which reminds me, the beading project with Tom and the other thingy. S.O.P! or whatever Tom says.:) So, the Rev. Henry Harke married them, and that’s all we know. Hmmmmm! Well, dag-nabit! Thank you Bill, Love & Light, Lynella.
February 23, 2005 at 4:52 pm #13811Bill,
Sooner or later, between you and Kerry and Stacey, somehow something one of you says will finally click and this will be etched permanently in my brain.;) You are so right, how can anything get so confusing? So, let me see if I got this even half way close.
Gentry Hodges married Mary “Polly” Staton…..Is she on our Staton post? Now I gotta go look…..
Thus begat Mary “Polly” Hodges? Why on anyone’s planet would someone name their kid with 2 last names from the same family? Gentry Hodges? What up wit’ dat’?:D No wonder I’m crazed, dazed and confused half the time! A Gentry Hodges and 2 Mary “Pollys.” And they’re all in the same “cluster”! I’m glad my mom let my dad name me after the “Quinella” (not sure how it is really spelled) at the horse races! He said “Quinella” and she said, “Uh, NO!” and they settled for Lynella. So, anyway, I always hated it, but now, I finally think I’m seeing a silver lining after all! O.K. Now I’m off to Staton’s to see what surely is there. Thank you kindly awsome sir! Love & Light, Lynella.
February 23, 2005 at 4:52 pm #13812Bill,
I’m sure we’ve probably been through this, BUT I found on the Staton post,
Mary Staton, b. May 1805; d. August 26, 1873, Warrick County, Indiana; m. HODGE GENTRY, July 23, 1822, Warrick County, Indiana; b. May 15, 1805, North Carolina; d. August 31, 1864, Warrick County, Indiana.
So, is it Gentry Hodges or HODGE GENTRY? Either way, I’d still like to know what these people were thinking!
Then, Mary’s sister Nancy Staton married Matthew Gentry. So, Mary’s sister married HODGE GENTRY’s brother?
And then, if it is Hodge Gentry instead of Gentry Hodges, is this flip flop maybe why we haven’t been able to find much on Mary Hodges? Cause if it is, I think something’s amiss there:confused:
In that case, wouldn’t it have been Mary Gentry that married a William Reed, not Mary Hodges?
Now that I have confounded and befuddled your brain to the point of qualifying as nearly pickled, does any of this make sense? AHHHHHHHH!;) Love & Light, Lyn.
P.S. Now I’m off to the Matthew Gentry post…..
February 23, 2005 at 4:52 pm #13814It is GENTRY HODGES. You’re looking at a record listing his surname first, i.e., “Hodges, Gentry”.
But both are surnames.
HODGES is his father’s surname, and GENTRY would be a maternal line, altho not necessarily his mother’s line. It could be his mother’s line or a maternal surname in his father’s line or either of his Grandmothers’s lines.
Look at it this way…. this wasn’t his “real” first name, but a middle name.
In many of these cases, his first name wasn’t used within his family when he was growing up because it was the same first name that they used when referring to someone older than him within the same family (a father, grandfather, uncle), and to refer to two different people by the same name would have caused some confusion about who anyone was referring to. I’m guessing his “real” first name was William, his father William being still alive. Once this older person of the same name died, the younger one suddenly starts using his “real” first name!!
Anyway, it provides researchers with a lot of clues as to who he is related too. That was also necessary in those days, so you wouldn’t marry your sister or something 🙂 Just joking, but more often than not, a woman’s middle name was her mother’s maiden name (that did not happen in Polly’s case on the one record you have of her).
February 23, 2005 at 4:52 pm #13815I’ts just refreshing to read this to see the connections again.
And Lynella, this seems confusing to me too! I by now have so many names I don’t know which direction to head in next. I feel like I’m at a standstill.
We have so much information with all of these postings by now that it seems confusing to me.
I wonder about posting specific counties..like a heading of Halifax co va or person co nc..etc. and then having people put the surnames they had with the dates, someway to clarify some?
Bill, what do you think?Sue J
February 23, 2005 at 4:52 pm #13816Bill,
Bless you and your brains! I think I just got a swirly!:D Now I’m really confused! But, would that mean then that Rachel C. (A) Evans could have had the middle name Clay? But her mother was a Miller. So, that was a dumb question. YEP! I’m definately confused…..Love & Light, Lynella.
February 23, 2005 at 4:52 pm #13817Sue,
🙂 You may have something there, I dunno’! I think just dealling with my surnames is more than I can handle untill it’s complete. Cause I have absolutely no concept as to what Bill just tried to explain and it’s making me ever so batty!;) Love & Light, Lynella.
BILL, thank you for being so patient and putting up with me.;)
February 23, 2005 at 4:52 pm #13818Lynella,
I am curious about your Hodges line.
I descend from Micajah Hodges b 1795 in TN or NC
He married Elizabeth Gray/Grey b 1799 in TN or NC
His father according to some is William Hodges who married Mary/Agnes Gentry. Some say it was an “Amelia”. We should put our info together and see what we have. This Elizabeths father was George Gray/Grey b abt 1765 in Wilkes Co. NC… he married a Sarah “Sallie” Benge. Her father was a Thomas Benge from Albemarle Co. I believe.
George’s father was b abt 1730 in Wilkes Co. and his mother was a Parks from Surry b around the same time. The Benge family includes Lewis and Terrell in VA and Martin b in Surry Co. NC in 1721. Does anyone know about this family. I have seen them before I think.

February 23, 2005 at 4:52 pm #13819Lynella,
Gentry Hodges’s parents were William Hodges, b.abt. 1746, and Agnes Gentry, b.abt.1766. Agnes Gentry’s parents were Joseph Gentry and Agnes Shelton.
See where the Gentry comes from in the name Gentry Hodges?
p.s…. There was also a Shelton Hodges and a Shelton Gentry 🙂
Sue,
One way of listing lines is about as good as another.
These people moved about every generation so I would suggest posting them in groups of three generations or so, where dates and locations were known.
Chad,
This Hodges/Gentry/Shelton/Reed group was in Tenn around 1800, moving to Barren Co and Warren Co’s Ky by 1810 with most going to N.Ky (counties on the Ohio River) and S. Ind (just across the River from N.Ky) by 1820’s.
……..

February 23, 2005 at 4:52 pm #13820My Hodges… Edna Porter married John Mahlon Wiles Mead and moved to Iowa in the 1860s or something like that. She is the daughter of Micajah Hodges and Elizabeth Gray/Grey.
The Hodges and Gentry are NA right?
What about the Gray/Grey,Benge,Lewis,Terrell and Martin lines….. NA?
Any idea which nations if so?
February 23, 2005 at 4:52 pm #13821Mr. Awsome,
Thank you so very much. You know, talking to me is much akin to talking to one of those red neck skunks! You tell them to stay out of the road, and what do they do! Though, what you just said did make some sense, sort-a!:p I sure can tell by your wording when I am trying your patients!;) But, that’s part of the reason why you’re so awsome! You must have enough patients for 10 people! Which is good as long as they’re not ALL named awsome mr. or mr. awsome with the middle initial B. I have to go back and read what you just wrote again, hold on…..Ah, yes, I do see now what you’re saying. Well, sort of. I do have to make me a full wall sized chart of these folks. Gentry Hodges first name, or the name he used, is his mom’s maiden name, right? Now where does Mary fit in? Besides her having married William Reed, I mean. Who’s kid is she? Oh, why can’t they have called them Rock, Tree, Hill & Dale? Well, I’ll get my papers organized as soon as possible. 😉 Love & Light, Lynella.
