Hi my name is Tracy Haywood. I just moved back here to Clarksburg WV, where most of my family are.
Im trying to research my indian herritage. On my mothers side I have a grandmother whos name is Margerie Collin and her father was supposedly 3/4 Blackfoot. My Grandfather from my mother was Joseph Evans, his father William Joseph Evans was supposedly Cherokee and married to Daisy May Bennett.
On my fathers side I have a grandfather, Richard Harris , who also is part indian, although not sure which tribe. As far back as my Great Grandparents my relatives have mainly resided in Harrison county WV.
I would love to be able to prove my native american herritage, but I have no clue where to start.Any suggestions or comment would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Tracy Haywood

May 31, 2005 at 2:50 am #15054Hi, Tracy. Welcome.
Many of the surnames you’ve mentioned are familiar ones.
Would you put some dates or a time period to your Grandparents’ names?

May 31, 2005 at 2:50 am #15059My Grandmother, Margerie Collins was born around the 30.s and died just a year or two ago.
My Grandfather, Joseph Evans, also in the late 20’s or 30’s.
Daisy Bennett was born in May of 1905 I know for sure and her husband. William Joseph Evans around that time also would be my guess.
Richard Harris i would guess was born in the early 20’s.
I did not know any of my grandparents on either side. They either died when i was young, living with my father across country, and one just never associated with the family.
Daisy Bennett is the only one I knew personally and that was only from birth to age 8 befor i moved so my knowledge on all this is still limited.
I hope to check with one or two of the remaining older generation that i know is still alive in this town, Clarksburg WV, to see if they can shed any light on my herritage.

On the 1930 Harrison Co., WV Census; Dist 8 Clarksburg; 15 April; Sheet 18A; address: 545 Baltimore St. Census visit 390:
EVANS, Joe; Laborer-garage; m, W, 27; m’d @ 20; WV, WV, VA.
………., DAISY; wife, f, W, 24; m’d @17; WV, WV, WV.
………., Wanda; dau, 7, WV.
………., William; son, 3 yrs + 11 months, WV.
There is also a William Harris, b.abt. 1912, living in Clarksburg in 1930, but he is single at that time.
These are the only ones I’ve found which are even close to the names you’re looking for so I think we’ll need more information.
Since you live in Clarksburg, you might be able to find some information about them in the courthouse.
