Christina,
Here are the older children of William and Elizabeth Colley.
1850 Richland Co., Oh Census; District 129, Jefferson Twp; 9 Oct., p. 435A; visit 172:
William COLLEY, 35, m, – , Laborer, $0, Ohio.
Elizabeth………., 26, f, – , Ohio.
Sarah……………, 11, f, – , Oh.
Isaac……………., 9, m, – , Oh.
Samantha………, 7, f, – , Oh.
Manurva…………, 5, f, – , Oh. (s.i.c. – “Minerva”)
Margaret……….., 3, f, – , Oh.
Mary…………….., 1, f, – , Oh.
William SHEATS, 65, m, – , Laborer, $0, Va.
Sarah Colley m’d John Koontz, 4 Oct 1855, Richland Co., Oh.
Samantha Colly m’d Levi E. Gipe, 31 Dec 1868 Richland Co., Oh.
(Where was Samantha in 1860? I don’t know, but she was the only Samantha Colley/Colly there in 1850, a dau of William & Elizabeth Colley. It’s also possible that this index listing is a “typo” and she m’d Levi Gipe in 1858 instead of 1868.)
I’m still researching Isaac, but I think he may have died in 1863, a casualty of the Civil War.
Coincidently, there is an older Isaac Colley, age 41, b. Ohio, living in 1850 Jefferson Twp. – go figure…. “there is never just one”.
This 41 yr old Isaac Colley had a Jackson “Kuntz”, 13, in his household.
For your comparison,
1860 Richland Co., Oh Census; Jefferson Twp; P.O.: Bellville; 6 June; p. 204A; visit 160:
William Colly; 49, m, – , Laborer, $0, $0, Ohio
Elizabeth….., 38, f, – , Oh.
Margaret……, 13, f, – , Oh.
Mary…………., 11, f, – , Oh.
Mayora………., 9, f, – , Oh.
Clarissa………, 6, f, – , Oh.
Sophia……….., 4, f, – , Oh.
……………….
Also on the 1850 Richland Co., Ohio census for Jefferson and Washington Twp’s, are other COLLEY’s which share similar naming patterns.

June 12, 2005 at 3:56 am #15210I definetly see some type of connection in the families, but the info is presented poorley. Confusing!

it also says his parents are from PA.
Having a little laugh about the Isaac’s on the Colleys
well my Gma Married the David Edgar Garfield
one of their sons they named David Isaac & he married my G grandma FLora Taylor.
My father thought he had all our family tree info and then I presented him with this stuff and he thought I was crazy at first, mostly because he never heard there were 2 David Garfields, and when I started talking about Suponia Alice Colley being Saponi, he was even more confused because there is a debate that we are Cherokee and or Lumbee, So I threw a huge wrench in the mix by adding the possibility of Saponi. I tried to tell him that Lumbee, Cherokee and Saponi tribes just in re: to location are close.
Cant hurt to ask but just as a sidebar if any of the Saponi, Cherokee or Lumbee brothers and sisters know anything about their people marrying into President Garfield’s extended family, let me know.
June 12, 2005 at 3:56 am #15238I found this Obit it is the only other Mullato Colly that I could find in the state of Ohio, he happens to also be in Richland County:
Colly, Allen — Bellville. Allen Colly, the mulatto, died last Friday aged perhaps 85 years, and was buried at the Four Corners’ Cemetery on Saturday. He was a resident of this place for fifty years, and was known to almost everybody in and about town. Submitted by Amy. [Bellville Star: 21 May 1885, Vol. 8, No. 34]
I looked up the plot markings for this cemetery and he was not listed, or he might not be listed yet.
after about 18 hours of research in the last 24 hours this was my best lead to William Colly Family in Ohio, possibly a brother, I also could not find Allen on the Cencus, maybe you will have better luck.
I also searched down south came across something that mentioned the Colly Plantation? Have you heard of this? any connection to us.
June 12, 2005 at 3:56 am #15239From “Early Ohio Settlers”, p.325:
William H. Coley married Mary Vincent on 5 April 1812,
by Edwin Putnam, J.P., Washington Co., Ohio.
———————————-
All were listed as White, but that wouldn’t be unusual in Ohio.
1840 Richland Co., Ohio Census; p.102:
Jacob Coley = 21001 – 00001 – 0 – 0.
household:
2 males under 5.

1 female 15 to 19.
1 female 60 to 69. (Mary Vincent Coley?)

Your William COLLEY, 35, b. Ohio, was visit 172, in the same district as Allen & Isaac COLLEY in 1850.
In 1850, it would be unusual to have people in the household who were not related in some way, so these “other” people in these households might be clues.
I haven’t heard of a Colly Plantation.

June 12, 2005 at 3:56 am #15247You definetly have the talent for this, I think my eyes almost fell out trying to research. LOL
I think this may be his mother?
Mary COLLY, 73, f, – , – , $200, Va. (William H. Coley’s widow?)
especially if this is from an 1850 Archive.
I will kepp you posted and you keep me posted, thanks for spending time on this
God Bless
June 12, 2005 at 3:56 am #15254His mother? Yes, that’s what I’m thinking.
Just speculation at this time, since the children’s sex don’t compare well, but the “Jacob” on the 1840 census may be your William, b.abt. 1815. With his father William still alive, he may have gone by his middle name. Just something to consider.
Bill
June 12, 2005 at 3:56 am #15255Hmm Could be Jacob? Anything is possible, I know that he states his Father was from Pennsylvania.
Have to laugh, I was just talking to my step-sister the other night, I might be starting to Research my Step Dads side soon, I just found out my Grandma on that side claimed she had Blackfoot and Pennsylvania Dutch, I told her she probably should research here, so I am going to try to get their surnames too. So much to do!
I just went through the written 1880 Cencus for the twnshp the Collys were in but there is no sign of them, my deadend is after 1870 it seems for now.
Again thank you
June 12, 2005 at 3:56 am #15256Oh I think the biggest thing I noticed is the Kuntz/Knoontz Connection of the Colley/Colly Families. I am going to try to look into that further.
