I spent some time over the past week talking with my father and he says, his grandfather Lee Thomas’ (Sr.) was an indian chief. My mother gave me a piece of paper that indicated that his indian name was Black Bear. I’m having a hard time trying to find a list of Chief names. This is just a starter for me as I’ll be working on his death certificate shortly. I’m hoping to be able to prove my indian ancestry and would like to enroll, but I realize that this may not happen. This is proving to be harder than I thought. My 2nd great-grandfather was full Blackfoot, his son also Lee Thomas was half which makes my father 1/4 as far as the Blackfoot line goes. Now his mother was either Creek or Cherokee (my mother’s memory is not what it used to be and we are unsure now). I’m not sure where to turn, what’s the best online site I should enroll in to get the most information so any and all advice is greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Karen:)

It can be difficult indeed.
I doubt that you’ll find a list of chiefs and I’m not aware of any Blackfoot bands in Texas. There may certainly have been family groups there as there were in many other places.
I haven’t been able to locate people that match up with your dates and names, earlier than Lee Thomas, b.abt. 1886, that you have referred to in earlier posts.
You should glean what you can from free sites before going to subscription services.
Try the family message boards at ancestry.com and genforum.com and the rootsweb.com site for Texas and Oklahoma counties. You should always require proof or at least “a preponderance of the evidence” to support whatever assertions you run into on the message boards and posted family trees.
Failing those, a subscription for ancestry.com’s online census records would be a good start.
