Indian Mascot Issue at Eastern Michigan University

Dear Brothers and Sisters I wanted to tell you of our on going fight and ask for your support.

In 1995 Eastern Michigan University changed their mascot from the HURONS to the Eagles, a change that came with great pressure from our Indain community, my friends endure being verbally abused, spit on & threatened on a regular basis, this continued even after the change by a group called the Huron Restoration Commitee. Recently in northern Michigan I was on vacation and over heard a conversation about the change from the Hurons to the Eagles and the gentleman in the conversation said it was just horrible that they changed, it was at that point that i turned around and spoke up on how our community is happy about that change, I think I made it pretty clear to him we are native, it seemed to keep him quite from that point.

I bring this up because I just found out that the community and our drum will be at the Eastern Michigan Board of directors meeting this evening, once again trying to stop them from changing the Eagles back to the HURONS! Apparently they dont care about perpetuating lies and racism. I am putting out the call, please stand by us in this fight. It is time for action, to speak up and honor our ancestors in a way they would want us to honor them, those who could not fight, we are the voice!
