Sorry for the duplicate post but upon reading it looks like the appropriate place to post this message which is seeking genealogy information is here. Thanks…the text of the original message is as follows.
Like many of you, I grew up hearing that my grandmother was Blackfoot. I was raised by her for some time and here’s what I think I know. She was born on a ‘reservation’, she never knew her exact date of birth so one was officially made up for her, she was ‘adopted’ by a black woman who raised her. Her name was Mattie Cheeks (maiden, Crawford) born approximately 1903 died 1986. I don’t know where she was born; however, I only remember her living in Winston-Salem, North-Carolina. (Forsyth County) She had several brothers and sisters…although I don’t know if they were blood brothers and sisters…they all looked like her…mullatto. I can only remember two of her siblings names…Mary and Lewis. She had 10 children. Five are now deceased. I recalled that my grandmother couldn’t read or write, so everything was signed with an ‘x’. Amazingly enough, she knew how to count money. She also dipped snuff and chewed tobacco. Yuck…I remember having to empty the spitoons and trying to dip snuff myself…wow…what a head rush…followed by a severe stomach ache. Any interesting facts that anyone has would certainly be fun!

I’ve been unable to locate them on any census.
I found a Mattie Cheeks on the Social Security Death Index and you can use the following information to request a copy of her Social Security Application Form from the Social Security Administration. Her SS# 243-12-7546. Date of Birth: 22 April, 1903. Born in NC. Died: February 1986. Last residence: Winston-Salem, NC 27105; Forsyth Co., NC.
On that application it should have the names of her parents. If you can get that information, I should be able to help you more.

July 30, 2005 at 4:03 am #15857I wasn’t aware that you could use this information to request her social security application form. I did find her on the SS death Index sometime ago. So, you’ve certainly been helpful. Thanks for your time, I appreciate it.
