Hi everyone…
Would like to start finding actual early tribes with some known surnames…and as we seach our families and manage to get them back to this time period..maybe we will start seeing a community unfolding…
I start with one of my direct surnames..Hunt. In this link if you scroll down to Tuscarora..there were many Tuscarora Hunt families..and Lumbee too.

Also there is interesting info here on names from this link:

If you scroll down to the very bottom there are Chowan surnames…I noticed one of those surnames of Newton..some of my Allen/Melton marriages produced children marrying Newtons..cont.

My mother is a Newton. It has been very frustrating hitting brick walls in her father’s direct male line. We have no trouble getting to John G Newton marries Nancy Hailey in Person co, NC on 10-14-1809. Not a clue where he came from.
His grandson, John G Newton marries Lucy Jones in Person co, NC on 1-3-1860 (Bond on 12-31-1859). Lucy is another enigma.

I just wanted to thank you very much for these links. This is awsome. I’m still trying to pin down some Reeds, Miller, Cowen, Cowan, Chowan??? and Evans, Miller.
But this is very interesting. You’re really doing A LOT of good here. Thank you. Lynella.;)
July 30, 2005 at 4:37 pm #16063Here’sa bit to think about when tracing names.
There was a Chief of the Catawba people back in the late 1700’s or there abouts, his last name was Kegg, a “derivation” of Hogs head! The English wieghts and measures, this chief once jokes that due to his drinking habit it may be shortend to “pint” etc!
Seriously this type of name change should be considered!

July 30, 2005 at 4:37 pm #16226I know, I know, it’s been forever since I’ve been here and posted! Well, now I’m back and will catch you up on what I’ve been up to later! For now, I am going to throw this out once more.
This topic really caught my eye. I have hit a total brick wall in finding information on my CLARK line that hailed from VA. I just know that the Indian blood in my family comes from this line somehow. The fact that they are so hard to track is a big clue too! I have a picture of my great grandmother CLARK and my grandfather always said that there was Indian blood in the family…..you can sure see something in their faces. My dad says he remembers him saying it was Cherokee blood…..what do I need to do to find this? I have the looked in the Cherokee by blood books, have scoured through census records, various rolls, etc. and have found the name CLARK, but can’t connect to any of them!
If I just knew something about the tribes and the intermarriage, that would be a huge help, but first, I need to figure out where in VA they came from! I know they came around 1845 to Green Co., KY. from VA. but am not sure WHERE in VA. One rumor in the family was Mingo or something?
The names are William CLARK and he m. Elizabeth WELLS. I have their birthdates and childrens names.
I need advice and knew this was the best place to come to….can someone help me?!
Thanks and it’s great being back!
