Since I was a little one, it’s been rumored our family had strong ties to the Native American in West Virginia and Ohio, the Seneca tribe is the tribe most often remembered. My Aunt has successfully sent her grand daughter to WVU on the Native American Bill. I’m not sure what that is, but it concerns me that if we aren’t of Native American Heritage, it’s money spent that should not have gone to our family. I’m also interested in the culture regardless, but I’m trying hard to find some help in disclosing the truth of the rumors. Can anyone help? I have a picture of the two women that are supposed to be 100% Native American in our family. My mother’s maiden name was Burkey. Her family is also related to a family called the Whites. No jokes on that one OK? Not yet anyway. I reside in Marshall County West Virginia, as many of these folks have. I do have the photo on my computer, by I do not know how to post it here? Can any offer help please? Thanks much in advance for any replies. Best Regards, Jerry

Email your pix to Linda. She can upload the pix. You can add your own avatar, though.

August 30, 2005 at 11:34 pm #16227Hi, Jake,
Welcome.
Burkee/Burkey is an interesting name as are Whites in some areas.
We’d need some specific individual information on your people in order to be able to help you much. The names of your Grandparents and their general time-frames would be a good starting point.

August 30, 2005 at 11:34 pm #16234My grandparents on my mothers side were Rose or Rosalie Hill, and Donald Fernando Burkey. The Hill side is where the Native American ancestry will be found if it’s found at all I believe. I know my Dad’s parents came directly from Lithuania, so we can rule that out all together.Donald and Rose both died in the 1960’s, they were in their 70’s, so they would have been born in the late 1800’s. Thanks to all for the help, Best Regards, Jake
