Looking for a possibility that my great grandfather James T. Critchfield was of the blackfoot tribe.
September 11, 2005 at 5:23 pm #16504Welcome.
Do you have information about when and where he lived?
September 11, 2005 at 5:23 pm #16505Yes, he was born 1791 in Pa. to Nathaniel Critchfield, His wife name was Permetta( not sure of the spelling) White, later he and his three brothers moved to Indiana.:)
September 11, 2005 at 5:23 pm #16510Is this the Nathaniel Critchfield who lived in 1800 Somerset Co., Pa & died 6 March 1843 in Howard, Knox Co., Ohio?
September 11, 2005 at 5:23 pm #16511No, Nathaniel was born in 1757, New Jersey, and died in 1859, Elkhart, Indiana, at least that is what I came up with in my search. Sons were James T, Arthur, Absolom
September 11, 2005 at 5:23 pm #16517Welcome esholms!
Maybe Bill will be able to help you further?
But this I had to check because I live in Elkhart, Ind. Here’s your Nathaniel in Benton Township in Elkhart, co. which is southern Elkhart co.

Is he buried in Brown cemetery in Benton township? White is one of my direct lines too, but they seem to have stayed in Ky from what I know so far. Originally from Va. Sue J
September 11, 2005 at 5:23 pm #16519Thank you for the cesus, I don’t know in what cemetery his is buried, I have been searching for the information for sometime and I can’t seem to locate the exact cemetery. If Bill can help I would really appreciate it.
September 11, 2005 at 5:23 pm #16536Are these the families of James and Absolem?

(the 1860 Clay Co census adds daughter Elzora E., b.abt. 1854 Ind. )
World Family Tree Volume 36, Tree 525, asserts that James T. Critchfield, son of Nathaniel (b.1757 Hunterdon Co., NJ) “was chief of the Blackfoot Tribe.” A WFT Vol 36 would be fairly old, I would think. Do you know who handed down the Blackfoot information in your family?
This lists James T. as d. 1861 Clay Co., Indiana and Pernette White Critchfield m’d 2nd (in 1866) William House (d. before 1870) and m’d 3rd (in 1878 Sullivan Co) Richard Pigg. The 2nd and 3rd marriages supported by Clay Co Marriage Records and census records.
The Nathaniel Critchfield who d. 1843 Knox Co., Ohio, was a son or nephew of the Nathaniel b.1757 NJ, Served in Rev. War in Va, d. 1859 Elkhart.
Nathaniel, b.1757 NJ, appears to be the son of Amos W. Critchfield, b. 1720 NJ, d. 1781 Hamphshire Co., (W)Va.
Almost all of Amos’s children can be found in 1800 Somerset Co., Pa.
Pernette White, b.abt. 1812 Ky, may be the dau of James White, b. 1760s, who lived in Clay Co., Ind in 1830. I’d look for James as the son of David White (b.abt. 1740 Va) & his wife Kizziah.
In the early 1800s this family lived in Pulaski Co., Ky.

September 11, 2005 at 5:23 pm #16538Yes, they are the people I am looking for, I can’t thank you enough for the information about Permette, I will try and look into this. I hope this is a break through
September 11, 2005 at 5:23 pm #29133I am also looking for the possible connection of this family to the “Other Blackfoot Tribe”. I descend from James T. Critchfield and Permetta White through their daughter Martha “Mattie” Critchfield born 1857 in Clay County, Indiana. She married Alexander Campbell Duggins in 1874 in Sullivan County, Indiana.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.:)
Sincerely, Susan sqknittle@yahoo.com
September 11, 2005 at 5:23 pm #29136I cannot find out anything about the connection for the Other Blackfoot Tribe, I guess we will never know. I don’t even know where to search. I have tried to search for the Other Blackfoot Tribe but nothing can be found.
September 11, 2005 at 5:23 pm #29153I will keep trying for us!!!!
September 11, 2005 at 5:23 pm #29156I know there has to be a record somewhere, or else how would anyone know, I wish I could remember who mentioned this. Thank you for helping.
