I am Ron Clark, aka Rolling Thunder.
My Grandmother, born Cloverport, Ky. 1887 is Cherokee, she was born Hattie Anderson, daughter of Cordellia Belle Babbitt and William Payton Anderson. Dellia was the daughter of Elizabeth Hatfield and William Babbitt.
Other lines of Cherokee come from my mother’s side in Tn, which is a bit harder to confirm. My mother was Ludie Mae Burress, her mother was Ludie Kate Ferrell married to John William Burress and her mother was Sally Russ married to Dink Ferrell.
No stories made it down thru the family
of any other tribal heritage, other than Cherokee. Within the family there are different ideas about this, but most of us are fairly certain that American
Indian entered into the Clark line well before the Anderson/Hatfield
Cherokee line. Assumption is dangerous for genealogy but it has
worked well for me giving me avenues of research to pursue. One of the reasons it has worked well for me is that I don’t get hung up over any one thing. If the information changes it just changes.
Family history is just that, family history.
Again, assuming that my information is close to accurate, the first Indian would have enter the Clark line in the late 1600’s and after that there has been a marriage to a full or mixed blood at least every other generation.
I have looked for the Cherokee connection to each one, mostly without success where it comes to a paper trail, but it could be that there was other tribal blood. I don’t know of any further ways to prove or disprove that particular theory and the scanty trail is very inconclusive. I am hoping that exploring the option that the earily tribal mix was Eastern Souian will shed new light on my search.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Ron Clark

Miller Jr. met great-grandmother Hattie Banks who married, greatgradfather Joseph Banks, he was a civil war scout for the yankees, grandmother came from 13 children born in Virgina. She for fitted land to a sister, then to the state. She lived in Syracuse, NY. She said I belonged to a lost tribe because of the color of pa’s skin they classed them as malotto’s, she was Mohawk and German..grandfather was Blackfoot and Irish..the rolls in Ny classed him as negro..its caused great contraversey in the family because..being brown skin the 1800 census alsways classed family with black..grandmother said it was the ignorance of the whiteman due to breaking up the lineage for us to loose what was rightfully ours. I am the greatgrandaughter who like her, has shared much about family. My family has always known the truth but did not know where to go..It seems that I am looking because of the pain it has harnessed on this family. This was my father’s people. Father named Ederith Joseph Ruckman, brother killed in the Virgina territory Dec 16 1975 Navy. He was wanting to find our ancestors…he was killed in Norfolk
