When some sees a name like Nancy nee Smith, what does the nee part mean?

“Nee” is Latin for “born.” It’s your birth surname; a woman’s maiden name.

Example; Mary Johnson, nee Smith simple means, Mary Johnson was “born” Mary Smith.
