Hello! I’m new to genealogy, and I’d love to get some advice and help.
My great-grandmother was Viola J. Shortt, b. Sept 24, 1886 in Dickenson County, VA. You can see part of her pedigree here:
http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=PED&db=james_osborne&id=I37923
You can see by tracing Elizabeth Bowling back a long way, that she supposedly decends from Powhatan. However, it was very obvious from Great-grandmother Viola Shortt’s features, that the Native blood was much more recent than 500 years ago.
Her mother was Elizabeth Mullins, b. abt 1857 in Dickenson or Wise County, VA. She married David Shortt on July 30, 1877 in Wise Co., VA.
Please, can anybody help me find the Native – possibly Saponi – blood? I can provide many more names and dates if anybody would like to correspond with me. Thanks so much.
Blessings,
Suzanne

November 14, 2005 at 1:09 am #17484Thank you, Bill! I’m very proud to have some Native blood in me. I’d love to know exactly what it is. We had always thought we were Cherokee, until my great-uncle a few years ago said that the people in that area were “Eastern Blackfoot.”
Blessings,
Suzanne

November 14, 2005 at 1:09 am #17502Hi Bill, and all,
Here is a bit more info on Elizabeth Mullins’ parents etc. Sherwood and Booker Mullins seem to be futher back in her pedigree. I can see how that link I previously sent is conflicting. Any help you can give me at your leisure will be wonderful.
Thanks much,
Suzanne
The marriage register in Wise Co. VA shows:
David Short, age 52, widow, birth place not given, residing in Wise Co. VA, married on 30 July 1877 to Eliz. Mullins, 19, single, born Russell Co. VA, residing in Wise Co. VA, son of Chas. (Charles) and Anny Short, daughter of Henry and A. (Alice) Mullins. David’s occupation was farmer. They were married by Minister Wm. H. Bond.
Sherwood Mullins Sr and Mary “Polly” Roberts were the parents of Elizabeth’s father, Henry J. Mullins. Her mother’s parents were Thomas P. Mullins and Nancy (possibly a Bowles). Sherwood and Mary did have a daughter named Elizabeth (b. c1832) that married Elijah “Buncombe” Mullins.
I have a date of birth for Elizabeth that m. David Short as 21 Feb 1859 Russell Co. VA. She d. 6 Sept 1937 at the home of her daughter, Minnie (Short) Mays, in Wise Co. VA, and is buried at the Levi Cantrell Cemetery, Wise Co. VA.

November 14, 2005 at 1:09 am #17579Does anybody have further info on this line of Bollings or Bowlings —
http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=PED&db=james_osborne&id=I24316
that verifies whether or not they truly are descended from Pocahontas? The Elizabeth Bowling here is my g-g-g-g-grandmother. Thanks so much for any info.
Blessings,
Suzanne

November 14, 2005 at 1:09 am #18466I am seeking information on my grandfather. His name is Willie White and married my grandmother Lucile Davis in Warren County NC in 1937. I believe he may be from the Haliwa Saponi tribe because they left Warren County NC around 1941 and ended up in Edgecombe Co. NC. The people in this area described my grandfather as very tall and some say he was white or possilby mullato. My grandmother was black and very dark. All of their children are very fair skin. Once they reached Edgecombe County, they refused to talk about where they were from. I think they may have left Warren County because of disapproval of interracial marriage. In the marriage license, my grandfather, Willie White, is listed as colored. I am so lost and I need help desperately.
