I was not sure if this is history or genealogy. I stumbled across some deeds in Halifax that have Cottrell names on them. I have yet to identify these people but am working on it. Also in Halifax at the same time is Asher Reeves. My Cottrell line starts in Greene Co and Asher Reeves has two daughters who marry two Cottrell boys. I want to explore if these families knew each other in Halifax. I will post the deeds because I know I have seen some of these names on this forum and I think the was a “Wynn’s Creek” reference that seemed to state that there is some common knowledge that we should all know about Wynn’s Creek or the Wynns but I am in the dark.
If any of these names spark a thought about these people please let me know what type of people I may be dealing with.
“Can anyone identify the Cottrell’s in this land document.
“7 Dec 1769 From Daniel Dean of Halifax to Henry Kerby of Halifax, 4 pds,
Wynns Creek, about 30 acres, bnd by Jones, William Terry, Henry Baker Kerby,
Hanover Henry Kearby. Signed Daniel (Q) Dean. Wit: Theo. Carter, William
(X) Cottrell, Mary Cottrell, William Bolling, Rec 16 Aug 1770, p60″
I am aware of the Bolling issues as they are as bad as our Blevins issues and this is the same area. But my gggrandmother Rachel Blevins came to Ohio with 4 Blevins children and is first found living in the household of Henry and Mary Carter and I have never been able to find out what Henry Carter this is. That would be a big break.
“Book 14 page 447
Recorded 22 June 1789 – Charles Powell and wife Sarah sold 150 acres on Licking creek to Asher Reeves for 100 pounds
Book 16 page 23
Dated 31 Jan 1792 – Asher Reeves sold to Anthony Powell – 100 acres for 72 pounds on Licking Creek and Deep Bottom Creek – Bounded by Wilies line, John Dickies line, Frances Pellies (Pettys?), and Robert Stanfield line – Signed by William Watkins, William Wood, and Dickie
Halifax COunty, Virginia, Deed Book 51, page 212 – 14 Jan. 1846 – Jesse Rives and Betsy his wife of Pittsylvania Co., Rhoda Rives, Betsy Rives, John Chainey and Nancy his wife, Paramon A. Wilkins and Susan his wife, Letty Rives, Daniel Rives, and Geo. D. Rives and Mary Ann his wife of Halifax COunty, to Robert Moore…72-1/4 acres of land…
Dated 1 June 1793 – Asher Reeves sold to Anthony Powell – 50 acres for 28 pounds on Licking Creek bounded by Elmer Wiley, John Wiley, Faney Turner, and Anthony Powell – Note: This is surely the same land Charles Powell sold to Asher Reeves in 1789 and Reeves sold it in two parts to Anthony for the same 100 pounds he paid for it. Asher Reeves signed Anthony’s marriage consent as a witness.
Asher Reeves migrates eventually to Greene Co and his daughter marry Cottrell boys. They also are found in Eastern Tenn in the 1790. I am wondering if this could be an earlier indication that the Reeves and Cottrell families knew each other and a possible migration route
November 28, 2005 at 3:33 am #37424I have a strong feeling there is a connection here but can’t quite see a direct link.
The Cottrell’s connect somehow – maybe cousins thru my Waters line. Asher Reaves is in Parrish family genealogy that I know I’m connected to thru DNA, but don’t know how genealogically.
From another genealogical cousin I see a possible Wynn connection through Jesse W Beaver b.1785 Caswell Co NC, d.1840 Person Co NC married to Jerusha Jane Wynn 1793-1852.
November 28, 2005 at 3:33 am #37427I have the Reeves/Westfall thing in my line. The Asher Reeves had two daughters that married Cottrell but they have differerent Ydna. Then we had two lines that have James Cottrell/Lydia Cash descendants and two definite Ydna one is Hatcher and the other Hall so not exactly sure how that happened yet. On atdna we all match including the Cockerell who fought Benge. Also match the Coleman’s who Westfall said that Moses Coleman who was in the cabin of Samuel Cottrell when attacked.
The descendents that have been tested that are Bluejackets are through his son George Moore who inherited his land in Champaign Co Ohio that he got through the treaty. This is the same dna they used at Wright State University to prove that he was not a Van Swearingen. George Moores mother was Margaret Moore who is said to have been a white gal taken in a raid of the Shenandoah Valley. I think my matches there could be in the Moore and have to wonder if that is in part to her being of the same family of Nancy Moore/Andrew Cottrell line. I think a lot more of these “raids” were a lot about inter-tribal warfare but I have to identify these families better to see if there is a pattern.
I have not been able to prove if Asher is connected to Peter Reeves the father of my Elizabeth of Hacker’s Valley, but it is a definite possibility.
The Cottrells below are the ones that ended up being in with the Hall and Hatcher. I have one match to Parrish which is Humphrey Parrish 1708 /Mary Hamilton so all of his descendants will match me.
I have two Winn/Wynn matches. First one is an Andrew Jackson Wynne/Rebecca Chew (dies in Union Co Ohio). I know this gal and I share the Seubering/Sebring line out of early NJ/Pa and that is also my Westfall/Hornbeck line.
The other is Robert Wynne/Ann Bolling. I have a study with 65 Bolling descendent and only one does not have Clovis dna. All seem to have married NA at some point.
I now know that we match the Kirby line and this is my top match at Gedmatch of my 1500 matches that they give. That is their limit. We know they came to Miami Co Ohio and we can go back to the Early/Kirby line and this is getting into the Randolph/Bolling/Jefferson lines, but I still have no proof of why the Cottrell’s were signing that dead. Actually I had forgot about this…but Dean may have married a Bolling. He was one of his indentures that did well and may tie into Adair in SC.
Somehow the truth is going to be in the wives. I, of course, love that with Native American being so matrilineal but I think there may be more multiple wives that people suspect. We have to prove that there are European parents for the mothers as well as the fathers and that is not an easy task but with atdna if you match the mother’s surnames odds are increased that these people came from her siblings or one of her father’s brothers. Too bad that more people do not document the women as well as they do the men…me included for years.
