I’m researching the William M Moreland family of Kentucky. His wife was Lucy Gaines (father from England, mother from Maryland, Lucy born Virginia).
In the 1930 OH Census Wm & Lucy Moreland’s granddaughter (Eva May Buckley Posante) lists her parents as being from the Black Foot Tribe. Her parents would be John Booth Buckley (of KY) and Emma Moreland (of KY).
I’m hitting the brick wall on this Moreland Family. A newly discovered family member states the Moreland family is the line of Native American descent.
The counties in KY are Shelby, Franklin, Anderson, Jefferson where we’ve located these families.
Anyone looking at any of these family members or perhaps come across any of these with your family lines?
Thanks.

December 14, 2005 at 1:38 pm #18147Welcome, Deb,
You’re right. They are tuffies 🙂
Looking at that 1930 Ohio census, it appears to me that the original entry was “edited” later in the “office”, striking thru the birthplace “Black Foot Tribe” entries and substituting “Montana” for them, and striking thru the racial classification of “Ind”, and substituting “M”. Such was life.
I’m looking at those early Moreland/Morland/Morelan and Gaines/ Goins families in north central Ky. On the 1880 Shelby Co., Ky census, Lucy, widow of William M. Moreland, is listed as born Ky, father born Va and mother born Maryland. What have you found showing her father was from England? Am I looking at the wrong Lucy?

December 14, 2005 at 1:38 pm #18149I it was one of the earlier records that stated her father was from England (I’m not near them right now). I also received a packet of info from a newly found cousin who listed Lucy Gaines’ family as from England.
I’m surprised that someone would’ve added that info on Eva May Buckley Posante since she looked so Italian. I have pics of both her and her father, James Booth Buckley. I know I shouldn’t. I don’t believe her father was of the Black Foot tribe only her mom.
This same cousin had notes regarding the Morelands as being the family Native American line but nothing more.
Thanks
Deb
December 14, 2005 at 1:38 pm #18172That’s why I presume the changes were made in the office, not in the field.
Altho the surname may have come originally from England, these particular people are all listed on census records as born in the U.S.
