Native American genealogy research from the Piedmont of NC & VA
My name is Spence Sorrow and I’m trying to find out some history of my grandmother’s side of the family. Her name is Sennia Ashley. She was born around 1924 and grew up around Waxhaw, NC. She married Joseph M Wilson where he worked in the Conda Gold Mine around Charlotte, NC. They later moved to Abbeville, SC and had 2 children Joe Jr. and Nancy, my mom. She has often told me that her mother died when she was very young and her father remarried so she has step-brothers and sisters and half-siblings. I often ask my granny about our Native American backgound but she keeps avoiding it. I’m afraid she will pass on without me knowing anything.
Thanks for any help
Spence

Hi, Spence, Welcome.
From NC Birth Index, Book 9, p. 1033:
“Senia Aliene Ashley
b. 1924, Union County., NC
Fa: S. H. Ashley”
(“S. H. ” is Samuel Henry Ashley. Wife is Jennie.)
(Waxhaw is in Union Co)
Joseph M. Wilson, son of Samuel A. Wilson and Grace K., was born about 1920 in Mecklenburg Co., NC, where Charlotte is located.
This Ashley line can be followed back into the mid-1800s and this Wilson line to the 1790s with certainty, but having always been recorded on census records as “white”, and therefore, assimilated for a long time, I don’t find your story surprising.
This Wilson line appears to be the one in the Yadkin River Valley (Anson and Rowan Counties) at an even earlier date.
Some of the wives’s lines can be identified and some not.
Bill
