I am seeking information on my grandfather. His name is Willie White and married my grandmother Lucile Davis in Warren County NC in 1937. I believe he may be from the Haliwa Saponi tribe because they left Warren County NC around 1941 and ended up in Edgecombe Co. NC. The people in this area described my grandfather as very tall and some say he was white or possilby mullato. My grandmother was black and very dark. All of their children are very fair skin. Once they reached Edgecombe County, they refused to talk about where they were from. I think they may have left Warren County because of disapproval of interracial marriage. In the marriage license, my grandfather, Willie White, is listed as colored. I am so lost and I need help desperately.

Do you know the year of birth of either, or both of them, or the names of any of their children?

I think Willie may have been born around 1896. He and Lucile were married in Warren County on Nov. 6, 1937 and had several children. Irene was born in Warren County in Sept. 1939 and all other children were born in Edgecombe County. My father, Willie White was a triplet and was born in 1942. He had other siblings born after him in Edgecombe in the 1940’s.
Thanks for your interest.

Also, Lucile was born between 1905 and 1910 and I think I have found her on the census. Her father was Will Davis and I am not sure but after my research Mattie Garland Davis may have been her mother. I have found 1910 – 1920 census entries with a Will Davis and Lucy (Lucile) Davis in the same house in Halifax County. They were located in 1910 with Mattie Garland’s family in 1910 in Halifax, Littleton, NC. In 1920, they were listed with Will has a widower in Halifax, Faucetts, NC and several siblings. Lucile was listed with a brother, Johnnie, in 1930 census in Faucetts township. The irony in this siutation is that in 1930, Lucile and Johnnie Davis were both listed as married but were the only two in the household.
Please help!

The 1930 Faucetts Twp entry of Lucy’s relationship to the head of household was changed by the census taker. It looks like he assumed a male and female of about the same ages, in the same household were husband and wife, therefore married, was corrected by one of them that they were brother and sister and changed that entry but forgot to change the marital status column.
Is this 1920 Halifax Co, Dist 38 Faucett, Sheet 10B entry them?
DAVIS, Will; farmer, 34, Widowed.
………, Lucy; dau, 13.
………, Johnie; son, 12.
………, Thomas; son, 10.
………, Henry; son, 9.
………, Charles; son, 7.
………, William; son, 5.
From “Index to Delayed Births, Halifax Co., NC” (have no idea what this is unless it records births of children born at home),
are two entries appearing to be Johnie and Thomas, above:
April 22, 1908…..Davis, Johnny. Father: Willie Davis. Bk D2, p.213
Feb 1, 1910……..Davis, Thomas. Father: Willie Davis. Bk D2, p.212
……..

Yes. That is my family. The delayed births are because there were no birth records kept in Halifax County before 1914.

January 4, 2006 at 1:05 am #18663This is a tough one.
January 4, 2006 at 1:05 am #18664I know Bill. I have been researching off and on for about ten years. For the past two years I have been very actively searching for my family. I have recently gone to the Halifax and Warren County NC registers of deeds and found some information on my Davis and Garland families but nothing on my grandfather Willie White. This Friday, I plan to visit the Haliwa-Saponi tribal office in Halifax County. I am hoping to find something there. Thanks for your continued help. Please keep looking. I desperately would like to find my dad some cousins, aunts/uncles or even brothers and sisters as my grandfather Willie White had been previously married.
I did find a WWI registration card that may be him but I am not sure. I just don’t know enough information about him. This Willie White was located in Norfolk, VA at that time and described as being tall with gray eyes and dark hair which is consistent with my grandfather’s description.
Once again, thanks for your help.
