Has anyone ever heard of these two NDN groups or tribes? I’ve heard references to them in passing while researching. A friend of mine mentioned the “Muddy Ru” (sp?) Indian name in connection with her VA family. The “Rayal” (sp) Indian name was mentioned in connection with the Blackfoot tribe of NC.
This is just an interesting inquiry on my part. Thanx
January 31, 2006 at 4:49 am #18957No, I’ve never heard of those two names. Sorry.
January 31, 2006 at 4:49 am #19140Hello Blackindiangirl, well this would be very interesting if you could tell us more about these 2 names, I have never heard the terms and would bet that they are folk terms used by someone that would be familiar with there origins.
January 31, 2006 at 4:49 am #19188Tom, I wish I could tell you more, but this is all I remember:
The “Muddy Ru/Rou”(?) name came up when I was talking to a friend from Spotsylvania VA, who is tracing her LEWIS surname. Her people are from Caroline and Orange Co. VA. Some other surnames she mentioned were COLEMAN, MASON, PAIGE, TURNER and HOPKINS.
The “Rayal/Rayalle”(?) name was mentioned by a MAYO descendent who lives in Chowan/Edenton NC. I’m trying to connect my MAYOs w/hers. She said her MAYOs were “Rayal” Indians.
My spelling on these two names are phonetic…..that’s just the way they sounded to me. I don’t know the correct spelling. If no one knows NEthing about them, don’t worry…….I was just wondering if anyone ever heard the names and figured I’d just put the names out there to see. Thanx guys.
January 31, 2006 at 4:49 am #19214My guess is that it’s a corruption of something, but I can’t place it at this point. Could it have been somebody saying they were REAL Indians. Does kind of sound like a southern accent.
January 31, 2006 at 4:49 am #19220Linda; Could this refer to “Port Royal?” Could they not be Pamunkey? Was Port Royal formerly Pamunkey Indian Town? I might be wrong.
Dan.
January 31, 2006 at 4:49 am #19228Hey Dan sounds pretty fair to me!!
January 31, 2006 at 4:49 am #19229I googled Muddy Ru and came up with nothing. However,
I did try Muddy Run and came up with a few hits for the Rappahanack River–Muddy Run/Indian Run.

January 31, 2006 at 4:49 am #19232How close together are Port Royal and Muddy Run? Pamunkey — Rappahanock, sounds close to me.
January 31, 2006 at 4:49 am #19234OK, I goofed that up! It was “Fort Royal” at present West Point, King William County Virginia. That’s where the Pawmunkey were in the late 1600’s.
To the north “Port Royal” is on the Rappahannock River in Caroline County and there is a Muddy Run lower down on the Rappahannock River in Caroline County, north side near Naylor’s Beach. Sorry!!!
Dan.
January 31, 2006 at 4:49 am #19236Interesting Dan…….I know where Port Royal is. Maybe that’s what my friend was referring to, because she did say that her people were from Caroline and Orange Co.s VA. So maybe she was just saying that Muddy Run was Indian Run?
I’ll have to agree w/Linda on the “Rayale” pronounciation, until I get clarification from the lady in NC. She is quite up in age.
Thanx guys.
