I have recently learned I have Saponi roots. I am looking for info on the Saponi, culture etc… My family surnames are Adkins, Thomas, Gibson, Baldwin, and Shortridge. The family lived in the Cumberland pennisula area of Virginia, but also came from NC, KY, and WV, where much of the famly still lives.
Thanks,
Shirley
March 24, 2006 at 12:54 am #19976Welcome, Shirley,
There is a lot of material on the Saponi on the “Share Historical Research” section of the Forum.
More specific genealogical information would be needed if you are asking questions about your surnames.

March 24, 2006 at 12:54 am #19987Thanks for the welcome. I am enjoying the threads, there is alot of information to absorb. As for geneology, the Saponi roots go back to Martin Gibson, he is my fifth greatgrandfather. Other names are Archibald and Thomas Gibson. Richard Allen Anderson did his PHD thesis “Who’s Your People” on my Gibson line, and contends that we are saponi. I have been to my library, I guess there is only one book at the college and I am trying to get them to make me photo copies. Any additional information I can find would be great.
March 24, 2006 at 12:54 am #19988Several of us have copies of Richard Allen Carlson’s book/dissertation “Who’s Your People” and I’m attempting to index the many names mentioned there in my “spare time” but it’s going slowly. The Gibsons are mentioned often, including Archibald and of course, Tom.

March 24, 2006 at 12:54 am #19995I hope my library can get me copies, I can’t wait to read the info found there. I am also trying to get copies from another book, “The Histroy of Buchanan County”, by Hannibal Compton; my library is working on this too. I guess, my GGGGrandfather George is spoken of alot in this writing, he was a preacher. I purchased a book called “Free African Americans of Virginia and North Carolina”, by Paul Heinigg, found some interesting information on the Gibson’s. I had a DNA test done a couple of years ago it showed Native and African roots, I thought maybe the test was off as I am not dark skinned, more medium, dark hair and Green eyes. My father is dark though, with dark hair and eyes, and two of my children are also. I have been told since I was about twelve that I look like Cher, I have the high cheek bones and sharp features. I am proud of my roots and am enjoying the search. I would appreciate any info you would have time to share.

March 24, 2006 at 12:54 am #19996I have only recently learned of my Saponi roots from a distant cousin. I posted on a Gibson geneology search and got a reply from a cousin (always nice to find family), whose GGGGrandfather was a brother to my GGGGrandfather George. Martin Gibson was their father, and was Saponi; his wife was Eleanor last name Unknown.

March 24, 2006 at 12:54 am #19998Sounds like you’ve worked out your Gibson line.
Do you have information on their wives’ names?
Bill
March 24, 2006 at 12:54 am #20000I have some of their wives names. Martin’s wife was Eleanor, I do not have information on her last name. Martin’s son George’s wife was Mary, I am unsure of her last name. Though, George’s son John Married Hulda Thomas. This one is confusing; in the 1860 census she is listed with John and her children as Hulda. The 1870 census shows a Mahala, with John and the same children. The 1880 census shows her as Huldy. I don’t know if Mahala was another name she went by or another person. The 1870 census shows Mahala B, which her middle name was Bell. John and Hulda’s youngest daughter Ibby (not sure what Ibby stands for-Isabelle?) was my GGGrandmother. Ibby married James Harve Baldwin (Father-John floyd Baldwin- Mother was Celia Adkins), their daughter Celia Bell was my GGrandmother. My father lived with Celia for a time In Grundy, VA., he said she was beautiful with straight black hair she had to move each time she sat down. She was dark, with deep set dark eyes. I have one photo of her, it is a black and white, and she wore a hat, but was easy to see her sharp features, and deep set eyes. Celia married Jonah W Shortridge and their daughter Maria was my Grandmother.
