Mr Childs,
Thomas Miles born 1752 Charles City Va. married Nancy Ann Patterson born 1750. Thomas’ father has been listed as either John O’Neil or John Miles. Can you help me find out which one of these is the father.
Also Thomas had a son Hartwell Miles b. 1774 Caswell N.C. that married Mary Polly Pillow b. 1777 Rockingham N.C. They moved to Tennessee where a grandson was born to Hartwell who was named Powhatan. Is this just a coincidence or is there a link to some of the Virginia tribes.
Thanks
Cliff

There are some Miles contacts here:

1810 Census Charles Co, VA
Edward Miles [other free person, 4 other free in household
Isaac Miles [other free person, 10 other free in household]
Isaac Miles [other free person, 11 other free in household]
Richard Miles [1 slave]
I would say the Powhatan name is pretty indicative of a VA Indian family. Those listed in the 1810 Census appear to be “other free person”, meaning non-white.

The family tree listing John O’neil/Neill as the father of Thomas Miles would have to be inaccurate if the dates listed in it are correct. John O’Neil/Neill died nearly 2 years before Thomas Miles was born, according to that tree.
“John Neill, b. 13 Aug 1701, Down, Ireland, d. 2 Oct 1750 Frederick Co., Va” and lists his “son” “Thomas Miles, b. 23 Sep 1752 Charles City, Va, d. 15 Sep 1838 Rutherford Co., Tenn”
Some additional info for MILES in Caswell Co., NC:
1784 Caswell Co., NC Tax List:
John Miles
Thomas Miles (also 1783)
Abram Miles
Alexander Miles
Jacob Miles
Jacob Miles Jr.
1786 Caswell Co., NC Tax List:
John Miles
Thomas Miles
Abraham Miles
14 to 16 yrs later, the John and Thomas Miles of 1800 Caswell would appear to be too young to be the same people listed on the 1784 & 1786 Tax List:
1800 Caswell Co., NC, Hillsboro District Census:
Page 122: Jacob Miles Junr, over 45 yrs old.
Page 122: Jacob Miles, over 45 yrs old.
Page 116: John Miles, 16 to 25 yrs old.
Page 116: Thomas Miles, 16 to 25 yrs old.
………………………………………………………………….
Hartwell’s son John Byrd Miles naming his son Powhatan P., b. abt. 1837 Williamson (probably) Co., Tenn, seems an odd time and place to name a son Powhatan, but since the original Powhatan was regarded as “royalty” by white colonists, there’s no telling as to why. You might want to check out all their relatives, though.

April 10, 2006 at 4:43 pm #20306Thank you Mr. Childs,
Yes it seems odd to me that anyone would think that John O’Neil would be the father of Thomas Miles even if the dates were correct. It makes me wonder if Ann Cox had a child by a Miles after John O’Neil died. There seems to be a lot of speculation out there and I have a hard time picking it up. I appreciate your help in sorting things out.
Thanks

April 10, 2006 at 4:43 pm #22111Are they connected to Chief Miles of the Pamunkey Tribe?
April 10, 2006 at 4:43 pm #22112Black Dutch
Chief Miles’ wife said she did not recognize any of the names in my Miles line. I have no proof of any Native connection. There is only circumstantial evidence and that evidence is very thin.
Thanks

My Miles line lived very near the Pamunkey reservation during the late 1600’s thru the early 1700’s. Starts with Daniel Miles who married Frances [LNU] ca 1680 in King William Co., Va.
Daughter Sarah Miles married Daniel Burford and later moved to Warren Co., N.C. and had other tribal connections there.
Have been trying to contact Chief Miles for assistance w/o avail. Have heard the Pamunkey are trying for Federal recognition and are very busy.
April 10, 2006 at 4:43 pm #22114Yes, it seems they are very busy. Mrs. Miles was very nice and patient with me even though they probably get called often for genealogical assistance.
Good luck
CLiff
