Native American genealogy research from the Piedmont of NC & VA
I was reading the article at this link:
http://www.mgcenter.org/genealogy.html
In it, it makes reference to Haithcock’s work and lists surnames common among the Saponi and/or Tutelo. One of those names listed is McGee.
Does anyone have any information on McGee lines that were either Saponi or Tutelo. I’d really like to know what areas they might have lived in. Other than references to the Chickasaw agent, Malcolm McGee, I don’t think I’ve seen anyone discussing this surname around here.
On my maternal grandmother’s side of the family are McKies….also spelled McKee, Maghee, McGee, etc. She is the person in my family that the story of NA (Blackfoot or Cherokee) comes from, so the McKees (or some variant spelling) are among my possible Indian ancestors.

Randall,
If you do a search here on forum for Mcghee you’ll find some info.

Thanks, Sue. I tried a couple of searches for this name, but I don’t think I used that particular variation. There are such a wide range of spellings used for this surname, even among related families, that it can be a rather difficult one to research.
Randall,
I forgot…mcgehee….as well.
