Native American genealogy research from the Piedmont of NC & VA
During some of my reading hereabouts, I’ve seen that there may be Saponi connections with the Winburn and Rickman surnames. Since Winburns and Rickmans married into my Holland line way back when, this perked up my interest. The Hollands have been exhaustively researched. I’m working on some of the lines that married Hollands. So, I’ve got some questions, both general and specific.
The first is general: does anybody know how/when the Winburn and Rickman families connected with the Saponi?
Next, I’ve got a Phoebe Winburn, born circa 1688 in Nansemond County, who married Joseph (of Spivey) Holland circa 1714. Her parents were probably John Winburn, born about 1662, and Phoebe Sanders, born in Nansemond or Isle of Wight County about 1666. Does anybody know anything about these Winburn and Sanders folks?
Finally, a few generations later, Thomas Holland, born circa 1750 in Nansemond County, Virginia, married a Phoebe Rickman, sometimes called Phoebe Winburn Rickman, in 1779 in Nansemond County. I’ve read that researchers have been banging their heads against a wall regarding Phoebe Rickman’s ancestry. I’m sorta thinking that she was born Phoebe Winburn, married a Rickman, was widowed, then married Thomas Holland, but I’m open to other ideas. This family wound up in Green County, Georgia, in the 1790s, some family members later heading to Lawrence County, Indiana and Coryell, Texas. Does anybody here have anything on this Phoebe Rickman aka Phoebe Winburn Rickman?
