I have been researching this family going on 10 years now and have finally hit the genealogical brick wall. Family traditions, Photos and some documentation say that the Fields Family was of Native Decent. When the Native Blood entered this particular Fields Family I have no idea but it was there.
David Fields b1740-50 North or South Carolina
(Had a brother or son named Lansford Fields)
.David or Davis Fields born 1760-65 in North Carolina
Married (unknown)
..Sabra Fields born 1785 in North Carolina
(consorted with unknown Lawson)
…Daniel Selana Fields born 1810 in Tenn
Married Martha Patsy Hatfield
….Nancy Fields born 1839 in Tenn
Married William Shackleford in Harlan County Kentucky in 1857
This Fields family was closely allied with the Sizemore family and seemed to migrate together until the 1820’s when most of the Fields Family settled in Harlan County and the Sizemore’s in Clay (one County North). (This Fields family was (I think) in someway related to the Perry County KY Fields Family but I have not been able to prove the degree) I have found circumstantial evidence that this particular Fields family may have been the same Fields family located in Bedford and Campbell Counties VA, this Fields Family was listed was FPC for a number of years. Of course the Family traditions state the Fields family was Cherokee and I do have affidavits stating that they were Cherokee. But I have also seen were other branches of the family say we are Lumbee, but Fields is not a traditional Lumbee name. I really do not believe that they were Cherokee, NOT one Harlan County Fields family member applied for the Cherokee Nation in the later 19th century. My experience says that at least one would have if they were indeed Cherokee. My particular direct line has always said they were Indian and Melungeon but they had no idea which Tribe. My older Great Aunts and Uncles have never speculated to what Tribe.
Other Native Surnames
Vaughn/Vaughan/Vann (VA,NC,TN,AL), Spurlock(VA,KY), Williams(NC,TN), Noe(KY),

July 10, 2006 at 5:14 pm #22213Yes this is my Fields Family. Davis (1) was born around 1740 probably in Virginia. There was a David and Stephen bound out to a Gates man in Albemarle County VA in the 1740’s. These two men appear to be the David or Davis and Stephen in Surry (Stokes) County NC in the later part of the century. A Stephen Fields enlisted for the French and Indian War in I believe in Albemarle County, he is described as being short light skinned and light hair and a David Fields shows up in Pittsylvania County VA in the 1760’s on a Tithables list. Lansford was first recorded in the 1760’s in Bedford County VA on a tax list. I believe that the older Davis married a Native American because there is no oral history on Stephen’s side of the family. But that’s just theory. The only thing is an Abraham Fields claimed Cherokee blood through Lansford. The beginning of Native Blood in this family is the key to understanding the probable tribe.
Lansford was born around 1735-40 (They were many more Landsford’s after 1760)
Davis SR was born around 1740
Stephen the same
It is believed that a Davis JR fought in the Creek wars and he is on the Horseshoe Bend Muster as Cherokee. Also they was a David Fields listed on the 1805-16 reservation roll also Cherokee. Yet we have Stephen fighting in the wars of the day and paying his taxes but Davis SR or JR did not pay taxes to the King or the USA and very few records exist. One of Davis JR’s children claims that Davis JR was born in South Carolina. If I could ever prove the existence in South Carolina I would say that this set of Fields was in some way related to Richard (Texas Dick) Fields 1/8 Cherokee Chief assassinated in the 1820’s by Big Mush I believe. The naming patterns of these two families are very close but in my line there are no Richards and in their line there is no David’s. I think DNA is the only way to prove anything at this point. The early Cherokee evidence is compelling but I am still not sure.
July 10, 2006 at 5:14 pm #22235Pat Spurlock Elder addresses Lunsford Fields in her book “Melungeons: Examining An Appalachian Legend”. Have you read it?
You’ve blocked your email addy or I would have sent you a pertinent excerpt.
I won’t post it here due to copyrights and permissions not asked for and a summary can not do her work justice. Send me a ‘private email’ if you want that information.

July 10, 2006 at 5:14 pm #22502I have a friend here in Somerset who descends from some FIELDs of the Harlan/Cumberland area. She tells me they are Italian and from judging from their last name Carruba I don’t question that. However, a Carruba male married a Fields woman if I am not mistaken. I will have to try to catch her and ask her what she knows. May not be the same FIELD either.
