Native American genealogy research from the Piedmont of NC & VA
John Riley was my gggrandmother Catherine Sizemore Stumbo’s brother. He was born September 1846 Floyd County KY and died January 7, 1900 Greenup County KY. He was a member of Co. F, 39th KY Mounted Infantry (USA) and this picture was taken at a Civil War reunion at Ashland, KY sometime before 1900. There is a copy of a New Testament in his front pocket, John was a Methodist preacher. John’s parents were Allen Patton, born 1815 Puncheon Camp Creek, Floyd County KY and Jain Jenny “Jendo” Sizemore born 1808 in Hawkins County Tenn. and died after 1900 in Floyd County KY. Family tradition has Jenny being a tall upright woman with long black hair. It was thouht that she escaped the Trail of Tears. John Riley was listed as a mulatto in the 1870 Floyd County census. One of John’s daughters (Lena Stubler) applied for an Eastern Cherokee Claim and was denied with rest of the Sizemore 2000 claims.
