Yeah Bill,
Another cousin gave me some info, I was hoping you could help. However, what info I have is pretty vague.
Quote:George’s wife is Mary (Polly) Daniel. Parents unknown, she may be the bastard child of John Brown, but don’t know for sure.
I do know George was born in Floyd County, KY and that he and Mary were married 1831 Perry County, KY. I know this isn’t much, but I was curious about this John Brown.

July 22, 2006 at 2:55 am #22367What was George’s last name? Gibson?
July 22, 2006 at 2:55 am #22369Sorry Bill, for omitting that very important detail; he was a Gibson. Thanks.

July 22, 2006 at 2:55 am #22384THAT John Brown m’d Catherine “Katy” Borders on 25 June 1817 in Floyd Co., Ky – luckily, he’s the only Brown there in 1820 (check against Mary Daniel’s birth year).
On the 1850 Johnson (created from Floyd, Morgan & Lawrence Co’s in 1843) County, Ky Census, John Brown is 53 and Catherine is 49. Both are listed as White & born in Virginia. Their Post Office was Paintsville, Ky, Tom’s Creek District. I know you’ll realize the significance of that.
Significantly, on the 1860 census, Abe GIPSON, 16, male, White, Farmer, b. Ky, is the only other person in their household.
Your cousin’s hypothesis could be correct, but with Abe Gipson there in 1860, it may be that the Brown’s or Borders’ may only have been related to a Gibson/Gipson line in an earlier generation (probably John’s line because Katy’s is recent) and in 1850 and 1860, it would be unusual for a ‘farm laborer’ or ‘hired man’ not to be related to someone in the household in this area, in some way. Catherine Borders’s father (Johann ‘John’ Bader) appears to have been born in Hesse, Germany, in about 1756, and d. abt. 1815 Tom’s Creek, Ky. Catherine’s mother appears to have been Catherine E. Sellards, whose parents may have been Hezikiah Sellards and Jean Brevard, from “Virginia”. “May have been” & “appears”, only because I haven’t seen anything in ‘print’ myself, but nothing which contradicts it.
Both John Brown and Catherine Borders were from Walker’s Station, in Walker’s Gap (in later Bland County), Va. I didn’t find any additional information on this John Brown.

Bill,
This is good information; I can see where she would have drawn her conclusions on John Brown. In the very least it does “appear” there are ties to the Gibson’s. I am going to play naive with the Paintsville, Tom’s Creek Dist. as I am not sure what you mean by “the significance;” I really am a novice, or maybe my memory is failing. Anyway, I hope you don’t mind elaborating more. Thanks for all the info and by the way, Spurlock’s book is great, I am really enjoying every page of it.

July 22, 2006 at 2:55 am #22393Bill,
Talked to cousin Debbie [quote:]That is the John Brown I believe who probably fathered Mary Polly. Those families are so intertwined.
She also meantioned the Sellards marrying into the Daniel line. Where have I heard this name before?
