Hello, My name is Mike and I am the great grandson of Amanda A. Collins – she is the daughter of Lewis, sone of Andrew, son of Bradley, son of Meredith. Amanda was born in Blodgett MO from what I can tell from the 1870 census. From the 1860 census, her dad, Lewis was was living next door to his dad Andrew and there he was living with his wife betsy, and his family members sampson, archibald, poly and others (as noted in Brenda Dillon Collins’) story. Is anyone know of theri relation to Amanda? she apparently had sbilings: Clementine and Samson. Amanda married Sterling Henry Hampton around 1890 when she was 21 and Sterling 19. They had lots of kids, Walter (my grandfather) Claude, Tom, May, Eva Pearl.. When I was growing up, there was a silence about Amanda’s past – but it leaked out she was part Indian. We never knew how much. Brenda’s article was helpful and ties it back to Meredith but there is nothing known about the blood line of the wives of the men. Would like to to more if you got it. Thanks, Mike
My email address is mcmnr@charter.net and my phone # 626-590-5954.
July 22, 2006 at 7:53 pm #22397Lewis Collins marr’d Mary E. Bates about 1858 in Appanoose Co., Iowa.
Her mother apparently died about 1844/45 there. Her father was Samuel Bates, b. abt. 1825 Ohio. Samuel’s parents were Amos Bates, b.abt. 1794 Pennsylvania, and Mary (maiden name unknown), also b. abt. 1794 Penn.
Mary Bates Collins died sometime in the 1870’s in Scott Co., Mo. Lewis then married Minerva, b. April 1860 Scott Co., Mo.
(Minerva may have been a Billings, dau of Clinton Billings, b.abt. 1831 Mo., and his wife Harriet, b.abt. 1834 Mo., d. during 1860’s Scott Co., Mo.
OR, she was Minerva Mason, b.abt. 1860 Scott Co., Mo., who lived next door to Lewis Collins on the 1870 census you referenced. )
Lewis and Minerva had a daughter Emeline, age 1, on the 1880 Scott Co. census.
Andrew Collins marr’d Betsy Ann Sizemore on 31 Mar 1838 in Clay Co., Ky.
