This was copied from an email from Ed….don’t think he will mind if I post it and all of us say a few words for their safety….I know they will be in my prayers tonight….
Hi Becky and Ken, know you guys are praying. Since 5Pm we have one Tornado scare after another. I just saw the black cloud from one warning north of us heading toward the river. Many of these are spawning out in the ocean and coming over the island or down east. The first one was spotted 8 miles out ( they are blasting the warning on TV again, it includes us and 2adjoining counties) . The first one was 8 miles out heading toward Emerald Isle then Cape Carteret. Next was coming from 5 miles out toward Morehead, Atlantic Beach then Newport. We are sitting here on edge of Morehead and also in Newport district. They are forming in the ocean as Water Spouts ( still Tornado) and coming into land. It will get worse as evening progresses and we already have flooding on the roads and it is just beginning. One projection puts the storm just on west side of Jacksonville at 2AM< which puts us in the north east or upper right quadrant. The significance of that is you can take whatever is going on in the south west quardrant and add 10 miles per hour wind velosity to that.. So we could well be getting 80 mile winds before morning. The good news is most of this will happen before High Tide so the storm surge is expected to be minimum. Will talk more later. Ed
Good news, the storm did not manage to make hurricane again and is going on shore in Brumswick County just below Wilmington. The wind readings may increase some but it will start to weaken now. We just had another tornado warning moving from Beaufort to Morehead to Newport so next few minutes will be crucial on that. Our apartment is very tight and in last years hurricane we could hardly hear anything at first but only when it came on shore and the winds circled the building. That was a category 1 but did the damage of a category 3, especially on the island and sound side. There are rain bands (heavy) and some light gust but the most threat will be from the tornados this system is spawning and spinning off which is extremely active with this storm. The next issue is flash flooding , remember this is the coast and especially down east which is anything east or beyond Beaufort,NC. When you have places that are already only about sea level (we have a village that actually has that name) it doesn’t take much water to flood. The next issue will be how much water goes into the rivers and streams inland. Let’s hope this storm will only be one of inconvenience and not destructive and resulting in harm. Everyone of these systems seems to carry it’s own personality so there is some intrigue as well as aprehension. We are in Good Hands and He who made us certainly will keep us. I am so glad to know His Grace does not depend upon our deserving it. Ed
I hope that as the day dawns that things went well for you and your family last night. We had lots of rain throughout the night and windy conditions this morning. As I watched the radar last night and saw the conditions for the coast and Morehead City, I thought of you and your dear wife, Rachael.
I expect that there will be more flooding as the rivers drain towards the ocean in a few days as well. I do still find it amazing how He cleans the earth….the trees all seemed so clean, with all the loose limbs removed and everything washed clean once again. And maybe this is an end to the drought conditions as well…
Well I slept through the storm, Rachel was up at 5AM thinking a tornado was upon us and it really did blow. We have heard there were at least two definite touch downs here but don’t know the locations or damage. Our daughter and her family are clearing and cleaning their yard this morning. I don’t think they slept much after about 4Am this morning but they are well. We hope there were no significant damage or death in this and just want to be thankful for His mercy to us all.
Usually these storms bring a crowd of surfers who can’t wait to jump in the ocean for “The Big Wave.” They ignore warnings of increased rip tides and danger just for that one moment of “Thrill.” Such is the persuasion of the human mind and foolishness of man. Thank you all for your concern and remember those north of us in Virginia and futher on who could be facing flood waters in the coming days. Ed

I am so glad to hear the storm passed and you all are safe, I cannot imagine one tornado after another, We just had an F3 hit a county just south of us in Minnesota that did a lot of damage. With the season upon us, know that my prayers are with you and your family.

We are well but remember the thousands who are being uprooted by flood waters at this very moment. There has been major flooding in so many areas and continues on into Virginia, Maryland and then futher north. Many of these folk will suffer and never be recepients of needed aid because this is not a Katrina disaster. Our prayers and concern must be directed to them and their needs.
I believe the scientist having suspicioned this now know that even within the inner structure of these Tropical Storms and Hurricanes there are cells like mini tornados dropping down as the storm moves . This along with what we were seeing when on the outer perimeters it is spawning tornados or water spouts. Some friends of ours were awakened at 3AM this morning by TV warning. In a matter of minutes their awnings were sucked upward and the metal frames were twisted like pretzels. Their home and they escaped with no further damage. Sometimes Waterspouts will come in and then lift upward when they hit the land. I feel sure we will hear of additional damage as it comes to light but we have been blessed. Let us remember all the others who are experiencing these difficult times and may they know our care and love for them. Ed
Dear Ed,
I lived for many years in FL,the hurricane belt.It’s been said that there’s no point of land there that’s more than 70 miles from a beach.(Am an Andrew survivor;(1992) we were 40+- miles from the eyewall of that 150 mph hurricane.)
We’ve had our share of foolish individuals who ignore other folks distress and worry and think to themselves,”Hurricane/TS coming!Great surf!” Reminds me of Proverbs 17:5b,”he that is glad at calamities shall not be unpunished”.(KJV) I’ll let them go their merry way!
We’re slowly digging out here in Central VA.Some downed trees,power outages,standing water.I’m ok,maybe I can get out tonight to Vespers;I’ll check later to see if our priest sent e-mail.

Hey All – Linda and I can sympathize with you because we live on border of NC/VA and the storm came through but we did not have any flooding or outages, only branches here and there, from what I have seen.

Ed…so glad things weren’t any worse than they were for you and your family. Does sadden my heart to see people put out of their homes due to the flooding…reminds me of Fran and Floyd. Will continue to pray for those who were touched by Ernesto….and keep a watch on the next one…Florence, that is spinning around way out there. Should know something on her in the next few days.
You know people used to build further back from the beach than they do now…I think that has a lot to do with the increased damage from these storms…bigger homes right on the beach. Nature can’t be reigned in…it’s the humans that have to adjust.
