I purchased the book Exant Voters Registration of 1867 and found my gggf living in New Bern Craven Co., what I found interesting was that his race was designated as black but in the 1870,1900 census for New Bern his race was designated as mulatto as the 1880 census for Pitt Co. Curiosity got the best of me and I decided to look up known Mattamuskeet Indian surnames and found these families race had been designated as black in 1867 but in earlier census these families race were mulatto, but never Indian, eventually members of the same families were either designated as either black or white.Family members with the same surname but living near one another were designated different races.Iam not familier with Tuscarora surnames so could not look any up also some counties are missing such as Sampson Co.I’TS obvious in posts I have seen mentioning that those in charge desired a black and white race only.

I found a copy online. Thanks anyway. But since it won’t be here for a couple days, could you check the counties I asked about, when you have a chance. The bookseller did not have a copy handy to look at.

Amazing, and yet par for the course. None of the several counties I care much about has a surviving list, it seems. Alamance, Caswell and Orange should have had seperate lists in 1867, but they seem to have gone missing. Dozens of Indian (and other) people who registered to vote in NC in 1902 had to identify an ancestor who was a voter in 1867, so we have those lists, but it would have been interesting to see the earlier list.
It’s what some of our older folks mean when they say they or their parents
voted under the “Grandfather Clause”
These lists are on microfilm at the NC Archives, and are a potenially useful and underutilized tool for geneologists.
Hi Forest ……….. dumb questions
Where men of color allowed to vote in the 1902 election in NC, if they could identify an ancestor who was a voter in 1867vote without problems ? Did white men have to show this proof also ?
