I am new to the forum and just wanted to post my family connection to Person County.
I am a decendent of Alexander Epps who came from Lunenburg County, VA to Person County and then to Hawkins County, TN. I believe his father was Freeman Epps but do not have anything solid to prove it. I do know he comes from the family of Peter Epps as he married his first cousin Lettie Epps who was Peters daughter. They are all listed in the 1850 census.
I have a sketch of Alexander and his third wife Barabara Heck if any would be interested in having it.
Any information you can give me on Alexander or Peter’s family would be greatly appriciated.

Do you know if your Alex is connected to Allen Epps and family, also on same census. If so, I have some information on them.
I am looking for Mary Jane Epps or Evans who was born about 1824, married Ruffin Stewart and went west.

Yes, I realize that name is common in the Person County area and malungeon related names. I know that Alexander is listed as mulatto in Person County, then list as white in Hawkins County. I have been in contact with some distant cousins and one said he was always told Alexander was Cherokee while another said she was told he was jewish-portugese.
Also, I believe there was a Allen Epps listed as one of Peters brothers, but I will have to check that out on my family tree maker.
Alexander is listed in the Person County 1850 census in the household of Peter Epps along with Peter’s daughter Lettie and other family.

I’m still working on this but have a question about the reason you think Letty is Peter’s daughter, other than they were listed as “married within the year” and were in Peter’s 1850 household? (just trying to sort it out)
Allen Epps (b.1796 Va -poss. Halifax Co) could be a research problem because “Allen” is a surname in this area of Va/NC and in 1830 & ’40 Person NC, he was living a door away from Drury ALLEN, who I suspect is one of SAJ’s people (forum member), i.e., Allen may be Allen Epps’s middle name.
Same with Freeman Epps – Freeman also being a surname.
Have you looked at John Epps, b. 1763 Lunenburg Va, d.abt.1845 Person NC and wife Lucy as parents of part (maybe Peter’s) of this group?
I found Allen Epps and family on the 1830 thru 1860 Person census – let me know if you need that info …. also Alexander Epps on the 1850 Person and the 1860, ’70 & ’80 Hawkins Tn census. You’re probably aware that Peter and most of his children also moved to Hawkins Tn.
If you need any of this info, don’t hesitate to ask.

I have Lettie as Peter’s daughter because of information a man gave me a couple years ago who said that his family had some work done through a professional genealogist named Prentice Price some years ago. He said that Lettie was Peter’s daughter and Alexanders first cousin. That is the only real lead I have found, other than the same man said that through the process of elimination Alexander had to be Freeman’s son or the son of an unwed female Epps. I also have been in contact with a George Epps from Georgia who is also Alexanders great grandson and a lady from Tennessee who researched the family, and both of them said that Alexanders father was Freeman. My Aunt also mentioned that the Bible Records she has copies of for Alexander and his family she thought came from Freemen Epps’ bible but she could not remember for sure and does not know who would have the bible now. She got the information from a women in Tennessee back in the 70’s and the women has since passed away. Also, my Great Grandfather (Alexander’s son) was named Harvey Freeman Epps, rumored to be after his great grandfather.
Lots of what if’s and maybe’s, but little proof!!
If I get power back on at house today I will try to post who I have listed as Alexanders siblings. I know that William Henry Harrison Epps and Eliza Epps are listed as his siblings, but past that I can’t recall.
If you could send me (keno90@yahoo.com) anything you have on John Epps and or Allen Epps I would appriciate it and I will send you what I have, including Alexander Epps portrait and some copies of pages from his families bible.
