Hello All,
My name is Don Collins and I am new to this forum, all though I have lurked here for a while. I descend from Valentine Collins. My paternal line is through David Collins, son of Valentine. I also descend from Valentine’s son Joshua Collins, through my Great Grandmother (my GGparents were first cousins) also, her father George Washington Collins was the son of David and her mother the Daughter of Joshua.
This Collins line migrated from the Newman’s Ridge area of Eastern TN to Floyd Co, KY in the early 1800’s. This area of Floyd Co then became Johnson Co., KY. This line is well documented in Richard Carlson’s work. He calls them the “Jenny’s Creek Band”.
It gets more interesting. I have had a Y DNA test done, shows Haplogroup E3a ( sub-Saharan Africa), and I have matches with 3 men who are from the Bunch family.
Needless to say I am researching this Collins/Bunch connection.
My family always said our Collins’ had a NA background, tribe unknown. It appears it could be Saponi.
Looking forward to “meeting” folks on this forum.

Welcome Don, my Martin Gibson is associated with your Valentine “Tiney” Collins clan. Have you read Richard Allen Carlson’s dissertation ‘Who’s Your People?” I don’t have the book on hand at present, but the book refers to Valentine as the leader of a group of 45 or so persons. Again, Welcome.

Thanks for the welcome. As I said in my first post “This line is well documented in Richard Carlson’s work. He calls them the “Jenny’s Creek Band”. So yes I am well familier with Carlson’s work. I have seen where some folks think Valentines wife Dicey, might have been a Gibson, related to Martin. I’m slowly putting all the pieces of my Collins puzzle together. Hoping to get some new help on this forum. Thanks again.

Welcome DCollins, recently there has been some good information posted about this particular Collins family, it may be as large as some of the Hardin families.
Do you or anyone else know if or what the Collins womens names were?
From the family of David Collins sr., did he have any daughters?

There is a plethura of Collins information here and many who share in your search, wish you best of luck in finding answers. I am trying to find where Martin hooked up with Valentine… Did they know one another in NC? I see Valentine was b. 1768 Wilkes and Martin was b. 1776 Orange, NC. It looks like Valentine then went to Hawkins, Tenn. and then on to Floyd. I cannot find Martin prior to Floyd, so I don’t know if they met in Tenn? Oh, the search goes on…

Shirley, I’m trying to figure out how to reply to posts, hope this works. If there is a connection wih Martin Gibson/ Valentine Collins , it might be throuh Dicey Collins wife of Valentine, who could be sister? to Martin. I don’t think that anyone has documentation to back this up. I think this Collins/Gibson connection could have happened in TN , but my Collins were also in Orange, NC, so the connection could have happened earlier , on the migration west.

I haven’t checked into the Dicey link, I will see what I can find…I have also heard her referenced as a Gibson, though nothing concrete.

Thanks for the welcome. I’m not sure of the the wife/daughters of the David Collins you mention. I am assuming you mean the David Collins that went on to MO? The wives of the early Collins are hard to track down. I am still not sure how my line connects to the David collins you mention. My line goes from Valentine Collins (wife Dicey, who may have been a Gibson), to Samual collins (wife unknown), to Thomas Collins (Old Tom Collins of Flatt River) wife unknown. I do not know who the parents of this Thomas Collins are. I have seen said one or both parents “could” have been Saponi.

Hello everyone *smiles and waves*…nice to see new “hubbub” about the Collins on this forum…LOL. I am searching the Tennessee Collins and have hit a brick wall. This is my husband’s family and I have traced them back to Joshua Collins, born about 1788-1790 in North Carolina. His wife’s name was Susan. I have found a few other Joshua Collins, but with different spouses and different (but close) birth years. In 1850 and 1860 my Joshua Collins is living in Jacksboro, Campbell County, Tennessee (two counties over from Hawkins) and is listed as Mulatto in both census. I have tried to use a time line with him, but just can’t determine who his father could be. I’ve been reading about the Melungeon migration and have tried to trace the Collins from when they were in North Carolina, then Virginia and on to Tennessee. In 1820, there was a Joshua Collins in Cumberland Co. NC. In 1830 there were two Joshua Collins . . . one in Lee County, VA and one in Sullivan County, TN. In 1840, there is a Joshua Collins in Washington Co. TN. (Can anyone help me? Does anyone have any information on a Joshua with a wife named Susan, (she was born about 1807). Their children were: Mary Ann, Hannah, Louisa, Mahala (‘Haley’), Joshua, Susan, (and maybe a son – names James, not sure about him). Looking forward to any information.

My name is Faye Greene and I, too, descend from Valentine and Dicey Collins, thru their dau., Obedience “Biddy” Collins and William Cole, thru William and Biddy’s dau., Charlotte who married William’s sister, Luana Cole’s son, Charles, thru their son, Wallis Cole who married Margaret Poe, thru their son, Elbert who married Polly Salyers, and finally thru their dau., Ollie who married Adam Barnett. I have a copy of Richard’s dissertation and it has a lot of information of my Cole ancestors. My mother and I have visited Richard and he seems to be well versed in Indian Affairs.
I have enjoyed being able to read all that has been written on this forum and hopefully we will someday be able to piece together our ancestry.
