Hi Everyone – I am new to the board. This is a very interesting site. My 3Gr grandmother, Martha Sinkey, b.c. 1810, married David Edwards in Iowa about 1840. They moved to Montana in 1864 and died there about 1880. All the Edwards genealogy that I have seen has given nothing re Martha’s ancestors. I have been trying to piece things together and I think she was the daughter of William and Mary McCartney Sinkey. Can anybody direct me to some information on this?
Also – there is so much to read on this site. What is the tie with the Sinkeys and the Indian tribes discussed here?
As an aside – my wife of 33 years is a 31/32 (as close as you can get to fullblooded) Blackfeet from Montana. I also have read about a small number of Blackfeet being located down with the Arapaho at Bent’s Fort in Colorado in the early 1800’s. I guess they preferred the much warmer weather!
Thanks much – Lance

Hi cousin. William and Mary are my direct ancestors. I am in a rush at the moment, as I have to take hubby into see his dr. I quick looked up my info and it shows Martha, their daughter, as marrying a David Cooley. However, I will connect you with bunches of your cousins if you wish, many of whom are better at Sinkey genealogy than I am and do some further looking later.
You might like to know that the Sinkey story is that they are Eastern Blackfoot. However, we have determined that there was at least some Shawnee. And one of your cousins, living in Spokane, was raised a Coville Indian.

PS: Send me an email and we can get acquainted better.
January 30, 2007 at 8:52 pm #24611Welcome Lance, glad you found your way here. I’m sure your cousin TechTeach will fill you in, but while she’s out at on errands I can explain that the Eastern Blackfoot are not related to the Siksika, being a Siouan group. We are perhaps tied to the Sihisapa Blackfoot Sioux out west. I have an article at http://www.saponitown.com/Blackfoot.htm that explains what I believe is going on with this. We are in the history books as Saponi or Tutelo, what became generic terms for the Siouan tribes of the NC/VA Piedmont.
There’s mention in the article of Blackfoot Town, DE. I don’t know if your Sinkey line will tie into this, but Techteach had family in that vicinity in the late 1700’s, as did I. Our families moved half way across the country, state by state, over a period of a hundreds years or so, always within a county of each other.
January 30, 2007 at 8:52 pm #24724Welcome, Lance,
Martha Sinkey, daughter of William Sinkey and Mary McCartney (b.abt. 1770), was b.abt. 1794 in Pennsylvania.
The 1850 Jackson Co., Ia Census; Brandon Twp; 26 Sept; p.323
Household 609, lists:
David EDWARDS, 67, m, – , (no occupation), $0 R.E., Vermont
Martha…………, 40, f, – , Vermont
Margarette……., 9, f, – , Ohio
Mary……………, 7, f, – , Ohio
Nancy…………., 6, f, – , Ohio
John……………, 2, m, – , Iowa
If this Martha Edwards’ maiden name is Sinkey, she isn’t the Martha b.abt. 1794, but may still be a Sinkey.
This Edwards line is related & intermarried with Techteach and Bev’s Andrew HOUSTON and Regnal GREEN lines so you’re still cousins 🙂
The above David was probably the son of Eli Edwards and David had a son David, b.abt. 1824 Ohio, who also came to Jackson Co., Ia., so David Sr appears to have been married before he married Martha.
From which of these children do you descend? Maybe I can help out here.
Bill

Hi Bill – Yes – David was married to Rachel Hoff before his marriage to Martha Sinkey. I am descended from the 2 year old John listed in the above census. He was my great grandfather. I would be interested in finding out what I can about the Vermont Sinkeys and how they came to Ohio. Martha would have been in Ohio before she married David Edwards.
Thanks much – Lance

Hi Shirley – thanks for the welcome. I was born in Libby, MT. Ruth, my wife, was born in Browning on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation. Are you Flathead, Kootenai, or Salish? — Lance

My sister lived in Libby for a few years, the area has sure grown…
I was born in Kalispell, but my mom lived in Big Arm, which is where my grandfather’s ranch was…my grandfather (maternal) came from Romania and my grandmother was from Arkansas (originally). My father however was from the south (WV), but the family lived in VA, NC, KY and WV. My native roots come primarily from my father’s side (it has been said: Saponi/Cherokee).
Again welcome; I hope you can find some answers here.:)

January 30, 2007 at 8:52 pm #25012It seems as if there were several Sinkeys in Vermont. I just went to ancestry.com. Bill, do you have time to unravel who they connect with? Obviously, since Lance’s people end up in IA with mine, they are connected.
