In my family lore, I’ve been told of the Blackfoot connection. After studying and researching a bit on the Blackfoot indians of Montana, I’ve come to the conclusion that we are not of that band of native americans. However, while researching the Saponi tribes, I believe I may have stumbled onto something. Most of my earlier ancestors come from areas where the “other blackfoot” indians probably dwelled. I have several possible lines: Collins, Ward, Brown, Lee, Day, and others. My problem is that I can only get back so far on the Collins line. According to a distant cousin, the Collins family is originally from England. So the indian heritage must be through a female line. Unfortunately, I don’t know all of the female ancestor’s names. Here’s what I do know:
Andrew Jackson Ward – photo shows very noticeable indian features…my great great grandfather. His parents were Riley Collins Ward & Martha Marinda Bradshaw. Riley was the son of Samuel Ward & Angeline Collins. Angeline is believed to be the daughter of Martin Collins & Charity Brown. Martin was born in NC and moved early to Bedford Co., TN. By 1860, Martin and family had moved to Washington Co., AR. Angeline and husband Samuel Ward were living next to them in Elm Springs Twp, Washington Co., AR. By 1870, Samuel and Angeline were gone. I believe that during the 1860s they left for Texas and ended up in Fanning Co., TX. But, by 1870 they are no longer there. Their children ended up scattered. My ancestor Riley Collins Ward was in Fannin Co., TX in 1870, but by 1875 had returned to Arkansas and was now living in Benton Co., AR. He married Martha marinda Bradshaw there in 1875. Their first and only child was Andrew Jackson Ward, born 30 Jul 1876. Martha died during and shortly after giving birth.
Now, I believe that my indian heritage certainly comes through the Collins line, probably through a female. Martin Collins on at least 2 occasions said he was born in SC instead of NC. If you review the 1820 census for Bedford Co., TN, you will find a Joseph Collins (spelt Callens on census). Does anyone know anything about this Joseph? I believe he could be connected to my Martin Collins.:)

You’ll see that there have been numerous posts about it. Be sure and contact our member ‘collins.’ He has much information on Texas Collins of Saponi heritage.

What do you have for Angeline Collins Ward being the daughter of Martin Collins and Charity Brown? I’m not able to get closer than Samuel & Angeline Ward living next door to Robert & Mary Collins in 1860 Washington Co., Ark.
Martin and Charity had a son listed as “Roderick” on the 1850 Bedford Co., Tn Census but I haven’t found a Robert for them yet.

February 3, 2007 at 4:47 pm #25352My information on Angeline Collins as the daughter of Martin Collins and Charity Brown is still circumstantial and through family lore. I haven’t found a marriage record on them yet. However, they would have been married in Tippah Co., MS. Also, they named their first daughter Charity Elizabeth Ward, apparently after both grandmothers. My 3rd great grandfather was Riley Collins Ward. My great grandmother, while she was still alive, spoke of a distant connection to the Collins family. She is also the person who said we were Cherokee & Blackfoot indian as well.
